Jaguar cars to celebrate 50 years of its iconic E-Type at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival

jaguar cars will be officially celebrating two significant anniversaries at goodwood’s popular annual motor sport events this year, with 50 years of britain’s best-loved sports car - the legendary jaguar e-type – being honoured at both the 2011 festival of speed (1-3 july) and goodwood revival (16-18 september), as well as 60 years since the coventry marque first triumphed in the gruelling le mans 24 hour endurance race.

Unveiled exactly 50 years ago at the 1961 geneva motor show, the e-type quickly became the epitome of 1960s cool, as well as establishing an enviable record on the racing circuits of the world, including goodwood. At the festival of speed this summer, the e-type’s 50th birthday will be marked with an original and highly impactful ‘central feature’ installation as a tribute to this incomparable motoring icon.

As well as the central feature – once more created by gerry judah, who has designed every memorable festival display since 1997 – e-types will be much in evidence at the 19th festival of speed. A class in the world-renowned cartier ‘style et luxe’ concours d’elegance will be dedicated to variants of jaguar’s most famous model, while the goodwood hill will see examples of each notable racing e-type.

Additionally, the 60th anniversary of jaguar’s first le mans win will be celebrated with a class of the marque’s 24 hours challengers. As well as the c-types and d-types which claimed five victories in the 1950s, jaguar’s triumphant return to la sarthe in the 1980s with the xjr series will also be represented, alongside examples of every other jaguar model to compete at the 24 hour race.

Jaguar e-types will also have a strong presence at this year’s goodwood revival. Saturday’s feature race at the revival - the fordwater trophy - will be a 45-minute two-driver race for e-types only. In honour of this, the official 2011 goodwood revival poster depicts the famous ‘4 wpd’ noddy coombs lightweight development e-type racing at goodwood.

Jaguar has a long and impressive history at goodwood. An ss100 won the very first post-war public motor race at the west sussex circuit in september 1948, and the marque went on to enjoy great success with sports, gt and saloon cars during goodwood’s active years from 1948 to 1966. It is testament to this special relationship that the 2011 goodwood festival of speed and revival are the only uk-based motor sport events officially recognised and supported by jaguar cars.

Commenting on this announcement, lord march says: “i am delighted that we are able to honour jaguar’s sporting heritage and the 50th anniversary of the e-type in particular, at goodwood this year. Goodwood and jaguar have always enjoyed a very close relationship, and it is entirely fitting that they should choose to celebrate these two very special anniversaries with us.”

Canaletto, Stubbs, Hearsey and E-Types. The Goodwood art collection grows

not only is goodwood home to two of the world’s leading annual motor sport events – the festival of speed (1-3 july) and revival (16-18 september) – it also houses a fine collection of art, including stunning landscapes painted by canaletto, and famous horse scenes by celebrated equine artist george stubbs.

This year goodwood’s artwork collection is expanded with the reveal of the official printed posters for the 2011 festival of speed and revival. These highly-desirable motor sport prints are certain to become much sought-after collector’s items in the future, yet are available now in limited numbers for a modest £20 each from the goodwood shop (located at the motor circuit) and on-line at shop.goodwood.com (http://shop.goodwood.com).

As in the previous 18 years since the festival of speed began, goodwood has commissioned renowned motor sport artist peter hearsey to depict the annual festival theme and main attractions with an evocative and colourful painting. This year’s theme is ‘racing revolutions – quantum leaps that shaped motor sport,’ celebrating the ceaseless quest for increased power, efficiency and speed.

The centenary of “the greatest spectacle in racing” - the indianapolis 500 - is a 2011 festival highlight with a stunning gathering of indy cars and drivers due to appear at goodwood in july. Illustrating this indy 500 focus, peter hearsey has painted the striking wedged 1968 lotus type 56 of joe leonard rounding the first right-hand bend on the challenging festival of speed hillclimb. The innovative turbine lotus 56 indy car used four wheel drive to get the most out of the 500 bhp pratt and whitney gas turbine engine.

Complementing this year’s festival of speed artwork is the official 2011 goodwood revival poster image, depicting the famous ‘4 wpd’ noddy coombs lightweight development jaguar e-type racing at goodwood and marking the 50th anniversary of this most iconic of british sports cars.

The jaguar e-type will be much in evidence at both the 2011 festival of speed and at the revival, where this legendary car will be in the spotlight with a one-make e-type race.

Tickets and further information for the 2011 festival of speed, moving motor show and goodwood revival can be found on the goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motorsport/ (http://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/)), or via the ticket hotline as follows:

Goodwood to follow the red brick road at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed

following the recent announcement that the 2011 festival of speed (1-3 july) will include the largest celebration of 100 years of the famous indianapolis 500 race outside of the usa, goodwood can today (1st april) confirm that it is commencing construction work on the challenging festival track to cover the entire 1.16-mile hillclimb with one million bricks.

The indianapolis motor speedway is affectionally known as the ‘brickyard’ due to the circuit’s original dangerous dirt track being resurfaced with 3,100,000 bricks in late 1909 to improve safety. Today a yard of the original brick track remains at the celebrated american speedway circuit.

Commenting on this special indy 500 centenary initiative, festival of speed founder lord march says: “authenticity is absolutely fundamental to everything that we do at goodwood, with all of the competition cars at the festival appearing in their original livery for example, and often campaigned by their original drivers.”

lord march continues: “we are taking the first 100 years of america’s most important motor race very seriously, so as well as having a line-up of 33 significant indy cars (the number which traditionally start the 500) on the goodwood hill, plus many winning drivers and famous indy 500 pageantry, we will be covering the goodwood hillclimb with over a million bricks to accurately replicate the very first indianapolis 500 mile race in 1911.”

a full grid of 33 indy cars will be displayed together in the formula one paddock at the festival, to create goodwood’s very own gasoline alley. Indy car highlights will include johnny rutherford’s winning 1974 mclaren m16 and 1980 chaparral 2k, the 1977 coyote in which aj foyt scored his record-breaking fourth win, bobby unser’s 1981 penske which was finally declared the winner by an appeals board four months after the race, and bobby rahal’s winning 1986 march. Along with these winning cars, will be everything from the peugeot l45 which heralded a brief period of european domination either side of wwi to the fabulous roadsters of the 1950s, and the sensational gas turbine lotus 56 to the very latest dallara-hondas.

Goodwood will be undertaking extensive testing to ensure that the nine formula one teams expected to attend the 2011 festival don’t bottom-out their f1 cars on the brick surface, along with the many other low-slung vehicles in action, including le mans winners and the very latest supercars. However, a number of competition motorcycle riders due to be tackling the festival hillclimb are reported to be bricking it.

Tickets and further information aboutr the 2011 festival of speed and moving motor show can be found on the goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motorsport (http://www.goodwood.com/motorsport)), or via the ticket hotline as follows:

Goodwood’s salute to the Indianapolis 500 centenary will feature over 30 significant Indy cars

With just over eight weeks to go until the 2011 Festival of Speed (1-3 July), Goodwood can already confirm more than 60 star drivers and riders will be present at the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture.

To honour the centenary of ‘The Greatest Spectacle In Racing’, the Indianapolis 500, a fantastic array of Indy 500 champions will gather in the West Sussex countryside, to create the largest celebration of Indianapolis outside the United States. A record number of new supercars set to make their dynamic UK debut at the Festival of Speed
British premiers to include the Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador, Marussia B1 and Hulme CanAm Spyder
Goodwood to give a 'first glance' of other interesting road cars, including the world debut of the Honda CR-Z Mugen, Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari and Porsche Panamera Turbo S

From 1-3 July, the Festival of Speed will be the only place in Britain to see the very latest supercars in action, as well as up close in the popular Goodwood Supercar Paddock. The Festival of Speed has firmly established itself as the best place to see the newest, greatest and fastest supercars from around the globe. The Goodwood Supercar Run is unique in providing a dynamic environment in which the public can view new models for the first time.

Unlike a conventional motor show, the Supercar Run affords a fantastic opportunity not only to exhibit a new supercar, but also to show it in action on the Goodwood hillclimb. Last year's Festival saw over 20 UK public debuts out of a 50-car field, and with six weeks still to go, this year’s entry is looking even stronger.

For 2011 the Supercar Run promises the very latest supercars from all around the world, with cars from as many as 11 countries anticipated. Cars already confirmed to be making their World and/or UK dynamic debuts will include the Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, Jaguar XKR-S, Pagani Huayra, GTA Spano, Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Hennessy Venom GT, Koenigsegg Agera R, Marussia B1 and B2, Hulme CanAm Spyder, the six-wheeled Covini C6, and the production version of the McLaren MP4-12C, which made its World debut in pre-series form at the 2010 Festival of Speed.

In all, as many as 50 great supercars will be in action on the Hill, which will certainly be a feast for the senses of the expected 175,000+ visitors to the Festival of Speed and Moving Motor Show. A number of other important UK debuts will also take place in the First Glance class, FoS-TECH and in the manufacturers’ vast exhibition area at Goodwood, including the new Morgan 3 Wheeler, Alfa Romeo 4C, Peugeot EX1, Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and Infiniti Etheria concept.

Away from the Supercar Run, over a dozen other new vehicles are expected to be making their UK public debut on the Hill as part of the new Goodwood Moving Motor Show, presented by Auto Trader, details of which will be confirmed in the coming days and weeks.

With just four weeks to go until the Festival of Speed bursts into life, Goodwood commences work on its striking 2011 central feature ‘installation’
The 2011 Festival central feature will pay a memorable and unique homage to the Jaguar E-type on its 50thanniversary
The Goodwood sculpture will be 28 metres high and weigh 150 tonnes – the same as 122 E-types!
Goodwood will also mark 60 years of Jaguar’s success in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, plus new production models in the Supercar Run and Moving Motor Show

After much hard work and planning, in just four weeks time Goodwood will end the speculation and reveal its much-anticipated central feature art installation for the 2011 Festival of Speed (30 June-3 July). The annual Goodwood central feature sculpture has become the key focal point and signature of each year’s Festival, with its huge impact always creating excitement, debate, flashing cameras and jaw-dropping awe amongst the event’s 175,000+ spectators.

For 2011, Jaguar will take centre stage directly outside Goodwood House as the Festival celebrates two significant anniversaries for the famous Coventry marque, as well as British dynamic debuts for new Jaguar production models in the popular Supercar Run, plus Moving Motor Show, presented by Auto Trader.

The Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival (16-18 September) are the only UK-based events being officially supported by Jaguar Cars to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Britain’s best-loved sports car – the legendary Jaguar E-type – as well as 60 years since the Coventry marque first won the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race.

To mark the E-type’s half century, Goodwood will pay a fitting tribute to this incomparable motoring icon with a dramatic 28 metre-high central feature ‘installation’, designed by award-winning sculptor Gerry Judah (his 12th for the Festival of Speed) and weighing 150 tonnes – equivalent to 122 Jaguar E-types.

E-types will also be much in evidence elsewhere at the 19th Festival of Speed. A class in the world-renowned Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance will be dedicated to variants of Jaguar’s legendary model, while the Goodwood Hill will see examples of each notable racing E-type in action.

Additionally, the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s first Le Mans win will be celebrated with a class of the marque’s 24 Hours challengers. As well as the C-types and D-types which claimed five victories in the 1950s, Jaguar’s triumphant return to la Sarthe in the 1980s with the XJR series will also be represented, alongside examples of every other Jaguar model to compete at the 24-hour race, plus a few that didn’t quite make it, such as the stillborn XJ13 and sensational XJR14.

Jaguar’s new XKR-S – the marque’s fastest and most powerful production sports car – will feature at the Festival as part of the hugely-popular Supercar Run, and an extensive range of Jaguar’s current product portfolio will also be available for close inspection on its exhibition stand and Moving Motor Show display from Thursday 30 June until Sunday 3 July.

Jaguar E-types will also have a strong presence at this year’s Goodwood Revival, from 16 to 18 September. Saturday’s Revival feature race – the Fordwater Trophy – will be a 45-minute two-driver dual for the finest and most authentic racing E-types only.

Jaguar has a long and impressive history at Goodwood. An SS100 won the very first post-War public motor race at the West Sussex circuit in September 1948, and the marque went on to enjoy great success with sports, GT and saloon cars during Goodwood’s active international motor racing years from 1948 to 1966. It is testament to this special relationship that the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival are the only UK-based motor sport events officially recognised and supported by Jaguar Cars.

MINI John Cooper Works WRC ride in store for one lucky fan.

Munich. 17th June, 2011. The largest motoring garden party in the world, set in the heart of the British countryside, will be the idyllic setting for an outing of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. This will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on the 1st - 3rd July and here a member of the public will get the once in a life time chance to be a passenger in one of these iconic cars while it is being driven at speed.

The lucky person, who will sit beside works rally driver, Kris Meeke (GB), on Sunday morning while the car goes through the 1.67 mile loose-surface forest rally stage, will be the winner of a raffle to be held at the annual glittering ball on the Saturday night. Dr Kay Segler, Senior Vice President Brand Management MINI, commented: “When we were invited to be part of this event, which has a worldwide reputation for being one of the biggest on the motorsport calendar, we were delighted. The affection felt for MINI as a brand is amazing, and I am confident the fans at Goodwood will give it as enthusiastic a welcome as I watched it have on its World Rally Championship debut in Sardinia. We wanted to make it even more special, so we felt giving a prize that money could not buy would be a great start.”

Meeke will be driving the car on both the rally stage and up the 1.16 mile hillclimb on all three days. This event, which was founded in 1993 by the owner of Goodwood House, the Earl of March, has become a magnet for fans who come from far and wide to celebrate motorsport and all things automotive at their finest. The hillclimb, which is the main attraction, is very technical and challenging and rises over 300 feet from start to finish.

This year’s theme is ‘Racing Revolutions – Quantum leaps that shaped motorsport’. Priceless machinery from around the world representing two and four wheeled motorsport will be on display for the 150,000 sell-out crowd to see at close quarters.

The MINI WRC Team has been busy testing ahead of its next WRC outing on Rally Finland on 28th - 30th July. This is the second of six WRC events in 2011 that Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle (IR) and Dani Sordo and co-driver Carlos del Barrio (ES) will take part in ahead of a full assault on the WRC in 2012.

Indy centenary celebrated:

In less than a week, over 40 significant and rarely-seen Indy 500 race cars will assemble at the annual Festival of Speed (30 June – 3 July), as Goodwood stages the largest centenary celebration of this great American race outside of the USA.

In anticipation of the arrival of the first shipment of Indy cars from the USA, Festival of Speed founder Lord March has laid the first of a number of genuine 1911 Indy bricks - sent over especially from Indianapolis for the Goodwood celebrations – at the iconic Festival hillclimb start line.

The famous Indianapolis bricks are significant as the Indiana track’s surface was made up of 3.2million of these bricks, ultimately leading to its nickname of ‘The Brick Yard.’ The authentic Indy 500 bricks at Goodwood will now become a permanent feature of the 1.16-mile West Sussex hillclimb.

As with the Indy 500 grid, 33 Indy cars will be lined-up on the Goodwood hillclimb to reflect the number that traditionally start the 500-mile race. A total of over 40 Indy cars will be displayed together in the Festival’s Formula One Paddock to create Goodwood’s very own ‘Gasoline Alley’.

Most of the cars will be appearing in the UK for the very first time, as will many of the famous Indianapolis drivers, all accompanied by the fanfare and pageantry that is synonymous with the world’s biggest single-day sporting event, so Festival goers can expect real razzamatazz, with music, colour and wild flag waving.

Indy 500 drivers in attendance at Goodwood will include the winners of the last five Indianapolis, plus 14 winners, victorious in 25 races, including the 2011 Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon. He will be joined by three-time champion Helio Castroneves, Indy legends Bobby Unser and Al Unser Junior, Bobby Rahal, driving his 1986 Indy 500-winning March 86C, plus Gil de Ferran in his 2003 Indy-winning Penske and Dario Franchitti, driving the Lotus 38 that Jim Clark drove to second place in the 1966 race.

Indy car highlights include the 1911 Marmon ‘Wasp’, 1928 Miller Special, 1947 Deidt-Offenhauser ‘Blue Crown Special’, 1968 Lotus-Pratt & Whitney 56 ‘STP Special’, 1970 PJ-Ford ‘Johnny Lightening Special’, 1980 Chaparral-Cosworth 2K and 1994 Penske-Mercedes PC23. An example of the 2011 Indy 500 Pace Car – a Chevrolet Camaro convertible – will lead the pack.

Commenting on Goodwood’s Indianapolis centenary celebrations, Lord March says: “I am delighted that we are able to honour this momentous anniversary. American motor sport has always been an important element of the Festival of Speed, and there is no bigger event in the American sporting calendar than the Indianapolis 500. To be able to honour the centenary in such a major way, and now have a bit of Indianapolis permanently at Goodwood with the start line bricks is a real honour.”

Tickets and further information for the 2011 Festival of Speed, Moving Motor Show and Goodwood Revival can be found on the Goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motor sport/ (http://www.goodwood.com/motor sport/)).

Jaguar at Goodwood:

The 50th anniversary of the launch of the E-type is set to be celebrated in style with cars from the past present and a little way into the future as Jaguar is honoured as featured marque at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Capturing the attention of the crowds expected to number in excess of 175,000 over the three days (July 1-3) of the Festival will be a dramatic Jaguar-themed sculpture erected on the lawn in front of Goodwood House. Measuring 28-metres in height and weighing 150-tonnes, the sculpture, designed by Gerry Judah, promises to be a striking centrepiece for the celebrations.

The main focus of the event will be the action on the notorious Goodwood Hill. The high speed 1.16-mile run will feature key Jaguars from the past, including an E-type Group 44 racer, a D-type, an XK140 and the iconic XJ13 racer.

The event will also celebrate significant current and future Jaguars. The XKR-S, the fastest Jaguar in a generation, capable of accelerating to 100 mph in a little over 8-seconds will take to the hill with Mike Cross at the wheel. Joining it will be the new XFR making its UK public debut – the same 510 PS model having won the 'Most Spirited Getaway' at the Festival of Speed press day earlier in the year.

Likely to cause a stir will be the beautiful C-X75 concept car which will be on display on the Jaguar stand. Serving as inspiration for a future, highly innovative road-going version being developed at the moment by Jaguar and Williams F1, the C-X75 embodies the key attributes of advanced, forward-looking design, innovation and engineering that made the E-type a world-beating sports car.

Now in its 19th year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed also allows visitors to take part through the innovative Moving Motor Show, held on Thursday June 30. Jaguar will be taking part with the latest models being represented and available to be driven by invited guests up the Goodwood Hill.

Cartier Style et Luxe in 2011:

As Goodwood opens its doors to over 175,000 spectators in a week’s time at the annual Festival of Speed and Moving Motor Show (30 June – 3 July), discerning motoring enthusiasts will be making a beeline to the Cartier Lawn, where the acclaimed celebration of fine automotive design – the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance – has become a ‘must see’ attraction at Goodwood.

Now in its 17th consecutive year at the Festival, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ has gathered hundreds of the world’s finest, most beautiful, valuable and sought-after cars, all competing for the coveted Overall Winner award, as voted by a distinguished panel of judges.

For 2011, the Cartier judging panel will include iPod, iPad and iPhone creator Jonathan Ive, design entrepreneur Anya Hindmarch, adventurer and TV presenter Bear Grylls, rock star Roger Taylor, artist Julia Peyton-Jones, royal hat designer Philip Treacy, and leading industrial designer Marc Newson.

Automobiles of distinction participating in the 2011 staging of the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ will be split into seven distinct classes, with an eclectic mix of motor cars for all tastes, including some of the most unusual and beautiful pre-War cars in a class for distinctive coachbuilt boat-tailed vehicles, including a stunning 1931 Bentley 4.5-litre Roadster and 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster, as well as some stunning and pioneering 1930s streamlined ‘people carriers’, most of which have rarely been seen in the UK, such as the 1934 Crossley Burney and unusual Mercedes-Benz 170 Kamm 3S.

Post-War Cartier classes will include a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-type, with a selection of significant examples. Complementing these will be some stunningly beautiful 1950s coupes, including a rare Farina Jowett Jupiter, a Ferrari 340 America and amazing Abarth 1500 Biposta BAT 1. By way of contrast, a class dedicated to post-War European people cars is bound to generate huge interest with early and original examples of vehicles familiar to us all, including a 1959 Austin Seven Mini, 1961 Renault 4, and the very first production DAF 600 from 1958.

A class of cars with unusual means of entry will include a gullwing Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Koenigsegg CCX and the wild Adams Probe 16, as used in the film A Clockwork Orange. Finally, a collection of ‘comeback kids’ car marques that had disappeared but been revived includes a 1991 Bugatti EB110 GT, 1996 Lea-Francis 30/230 and 2001 Veritas RS3. In all, the 2011 Cartier lawn promises to offer a truly visual treat for lovers of cars of all types.

During the weekend, a visit to the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ is made all the more enjoyable by a superb soundtrack of live jazz playing on the bandstand on both Saturday and Sunday, making this is an unmissable occasion for anyone who appreciates the inherent creative magnificence of great automobiles.

Ferrari:

Ferrari is proud to exhibit its new flagship V12 four-seater, the FF, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, alongside the front engined V8 California and the mid-rear mounted 458 Italia.

The FF ushers in an entirely new GT sports car concept and represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution with the Prancing Horse’s first ever four-wheel drive system. The FF is the first road car to take drive to the front wheels from the front of the crankshaft, rather than through a separate transfer case. The innovative and patented 4RM system weighs 50 per cent less than a conventional four-wheel drive system and ensures perfect weight distribution (47:53) for the optimum driving performance that clients expect from a Ferrari, even for a Grand Tourer with four seats.

Exceptional performance comes courtesy of the new 6,262cc direct injection engine which develops 660hp at 8,000 rpm. In tandem with its transaxle dual-clutch F1 gearbox, stunning acceleration (0-62mph in 3.7sec) is guaranteed.

Ferrari’s new flagship V12 four-seater melds to an unprecedented level an extremely sporty, high-performance character with incredible versatility, superb comfort and sophisticated elegance, guaranteeing both driver and passengers an absolutely unique driving experience.

Also taking part in the event is the Ferrari 458 Italia, an 8-cylinder two-seater berlinetta with a mid-rear mounted engine, which represents a genuine break with the past in terms of Maranello’s previous high-performance sports cars. Designed to fulfil the expectations and ambitions of our most passionate clients, the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations.

Thanks to a 4,499cc V8 engine, which punches out 570hp, the F1 dual-clutch gearbox and a 1,380kg dry weight, the 458 Italia boasts an extraordinary weight-power ratio of 2.42 kg (a power-weight ratio of 413 hp per ton). This means it sprints from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.4 seconds and hits a maximum speed of over 203mph.

The 458 Italia on display this year at the Festival of Speed will be a “bi-colore” Rosso Fuoco (dark red) car with a Nero Daytona roof (black). This car encapsulates the racing pedigree of the 458 Italia with the full carbon-fibre interior and exterior packages, including carbon-fibre rear diffuser, side sills and F1-inspired front winglets.

The Ferrari California is the Prancing Horse’s first front-engined V8 which shares styling cues with one of the greatest designs from Ferrari’s history, the 250 GT California. The new California, however, is packed with the latest technology and includes Ferrari’s first application of the dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox, a direct injection 4.3 V8 engine with 460hp, the latest F1-Trac traction control system, multi-link rear suspension, and, of course, an innovative retractable folding hardtop that opens or closes in only 14 seconds. The California has already received the critical acclaim of the automotive press around the world, with Top Gear claiming it is a “proper God’s honest, marrow-deep Ferrari”, and Autocar describing it as “absolutely bloody marvellous!”

The Ferrari California on display at Goodwood features a “bi-colore” roof, with the car painted in Tour de France (dark blue) and the roof and A-pillars in Grigio Titanio (Silver) to echo the tradition of bi-colore berlinettas of the 1950s and 1960s. The car on display in the Supercar Paddock also features host of extra factory-fit options from the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme, such as diamond-stitching on the rear seats and Cavallino stitching on the headrests.

Ferrari is also represented by the Scuderia Ferrari team who will be demonstrating the 2009 F1 car, driven by Marc Gené (TBC), throughout the weekend. Additional fine examples of Ferrari’s illustrious racing heritage can also be seen in the Cathedral Paddock, with the following privately-owned cars entered in this year’s event:

1951 Ferrari 340 America (Fifties Finesse)
1953 Ferrari 375MM Berlinetta (Classic Endurance Racers)
1968 Ferrari 312/68 (Garagists Grand Prix Cars)
1968 Ferrari 246 Tasman (The Cosworth Years)
1972 Ferrari 312 PB (Open Racing Prototypes)
1973 Ferrari 312 B3 (The Cosworth Years)
1979 Ferrari 512 BB/LM (Post-war GTs)

Toyota:

Toyota and Lexus will raise the sound and spectacle of the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed (30 June to 3 July) with a full-blooded array of competition machinery, past and present.

At the cutting edge of road car performance, Lexus will be showing its LFA supercar, running for the first time with the Nürburgring Package. This combination of detailed engine, suspension and bodywork adjustments – available as an exclusive option on just 50 of the 500 LFA that are being built – give the car more track-focused performance, increasing downforce with elements such as a larger front spoiler and fixed rear wing, while maintaining the car’s 3.7-second nought to 62mph acceleration time through an increase in output from the 4.8-litre V10 engine to 562hp.

The Goodwood hillclimb will also host Gazoo Racing’s full-blooded competition LFA, direct from its participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race.

The Festival of Speed will mark a reunion for Belgian F1 grand prix winner Thierry Boutsen with the Toyota GT One sportscar he drove at Le Mans in 1999. Boutsen and the GT One will be joined on Goodwood’s hillclimb by Toyota’s newest race car, the Dynojet Racing Toyota Avensis driven by Frank Wrathall in the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

Jonny Milner will once again be in hot contention to claim the fastest time up the hill, returning with his Toyota Sprint Series Celica. Milner, a past winner of the British Rally Championship in a Corolla WRC, will have around 800bhp on tap in the supercharged Celica.

The hillclimb course will also provide a rare chance to see the MR2-based Toyota Group S car in action, a prototype rally car from the 1980s that never saw competition after championship regulations were changed. The machine is one of just two that have survived.

Juha Kankkunen, one of world rallying’s most successful drivers, will be taking the wheel of a mighty Group B Celica, a version of the car that was specially built by TTE to take part in the Hong Kong – Beijing Rally in 1986.

Toyota’s rallying greats will be out in force on Goodwood’s forest stage, led by Björn Waldegård in another Group B Celica, the famous “King of Africa” that dominated the Safari and Ivory Coast rallies in the mid-1980s. Carlos Sainz’s 1992 WRC Celica and a WRC Corolla – piloted by Jonny Milner – will also be taking part, together with one of the earliest rallying Celica cars, a TA23 that was prepared for Group 1 competition in the French rally championship in 1981.

Joining the historic rally machinery will be this year’s class-winning Land Cruiser V8 from the Dakar Rally. The car, driven on the event by Jun Mitsuhashi and Alain Geuhennec, took a third consecutive victory in the T2 category for production spec’ vehicles, adding to a run of six wins for Land Cruiser (100 and 200/V8 versions) in the event.

The Toyota pavilion will mark the first UK appearance of the new Yaris hybrid concept, previewing the launch of the full hybrid version of Toyota’s next-generation supermini that is scheduled to go on sale in 2012. It will be shown alongside a rare example of Toyota’s original 1960s sports car, the 2000GT, plus Gazoo Racing’s wild iQ racing concept and MR2-based hybrid race car.

Toyota will also be giving festival visitors the chance to see beneath the skin of the Auris Hybrid and its Prius-based Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle with cut-away and chassis exhibits on show, together with the new full hybrid Lexus CT 200h in the Technology Pavilion.

Mazda:

Visitors to this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will be in for a unique treat when the Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B takes to the hill, filling the West Sussex venue with one of motorsport’s most evocative and distinctive soundtracks.

In 1991 Mazda confounded its critics and rewrote motorsport history when its rotary-powered 787B won the 24-Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most arduous and taxing endurance race. Mazda became the first - and to date the only - Japanese car manufacturer to win the race, and the only marque ever to do so with a rotary-engined car. The 700PS carbonfibre-bodied racer, which has a 210mph top speed, completed 362 laps at an average speed of 127.62mph.

Under the seasoned eye of six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx, the factory-backed team entered three cars into the 1991 race. The winning 787B, number 55, wore the iconic green and orange livery, and was driven by the crack team of Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot. It ran faultlessly - its only mishap being a blown headlight bulb - and 24 hours and 3065 miles later, Herbert took the chequered flag. The two other 787Bs also finished in the top ten, underlining the strength and dependability of their rotary powerplants.

Ex-Formula 1 driver and Le Mans veteran Mike Wilds and current Mazda works driver Mark Ticehurst will be driving the 787B up the hallowed Goodwood hill throughout the festival weekend. The Mazda 787B arrives at Goodwood after a painstaking restoration and test programme to bring it back to driving condition for the first time since it took to the track in 1991. Last month saw the 787B participate in an evocative demonstration drive by Johnny Herbert in front of a huge audience before the start of the Le Mans race.

The 787B will be joined by Mazda UK’s latest motorsport sensation, the MX-5 GT. Taking on top racing brands like Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and BMW in this year’s Britcar Dunlop Production GTN Championship, the MX-5 GT racecar epitomises the MX-5’s giant-slaying attributes of lightweight athleticism, wrist-flick agility and bullet-proof reliability, all at an affordable cost.

The MX-5 GT is powered by a tuned 275bhp 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine and features a six-speed sequential paddle-shift gearbox, carbonfibre doors and polycarbonate windows. With a kerb weight of just 850kg – the result of a painstaking 400-hour build by motorsport engineering specialist Jota Sport – the MX-5 GT accelerates from 0-to-60mph in just three seconds and has a top speed of 160mph.

With Mark Ticehurst and talented Auto Express journalist Owen Mildenhall behind the wheel, the MX-5 GT has already racked up two podium results and currently lies fifth in the championship.

As if one red-hot MX-5 wasn’t enough, Banzai Magazine will also be displaying its jaw-dropping MX-5 conversion. Created by the UK’s best-selling Japanese tuning magazine as an homage to the Mazda Furai concept car, the matte black and glossy red 2.0i Roadster Coupe is fitted with a raft of dynamic and visual upgrades. The stunning 1967 Cosmo Sport, also on Mazda’s show stand, will be the perfect foil for the Banzai MX-5.

And coming right back to the 21st Century, Mazda will also have full details on its revolutionary SKYACTIV technology. This technology will ensure driving remains fun while also addressing environmental concerns with fuel economy and CO2 emissions on a par with hybrids. Every new model from 2012 will embody SKYACTIV technology, this radical new efficiency and lightweight system saw Mazda’s engineers go back to the drawing board for a radical rethink of how the car’s chassis, body, engine and transmission could be redesigned to be inherently lighter and more efficient while still delivering Mazda’s hallmark on-road dynamism.

“Exactly half a century ago, Mazda started development of the rotary engine. The line that can be drawn from that bold new initiative, through to our 1991 victory at Le Mans, and on to our exciting SKYACTIV technology development programme, is founded on our desire to never stop challenging and to defy convention,” said Mazda PR director Graeme Fudge.

Audi:

July 1 to 3 are the dates to remember: the Earl of March and Kinrara is inviting enthusiasts again to the Mecca of historic motorsport – the Goodwood Festival of Speed. As in previous years, 150,000 visitors are expected. Very British: tickets have to be bought in advance. Goodwood is a who’s who of motorsport history, where legendary race drivers of the past and their cars come together. Audi Tradition is bringing two Auto Union Silver Arrow cars along, with celebrity drivers: Nick Mason, drummer of the Pink Floyd rock group, and ex-Formula 1 star Hans-Joachim Stuck.

Stuck has a family link with the Auto Union Silver Arrows of the 1930s. In 1934 his father scored the first race victories for the newly established Auto Union racing department. Stuck senior, respectfully nicknamed “King of the Hills”, set several world speed records right from the start on the Avus racetrack in Berlin, at the wheel of the 16-cylinder mid-engine racing car designed by Ferdinand Porsche. More victories in the car’s first season ushered in the legendary “supercharger era” that was only brought to an abrupt end by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Stuck senior was “unofficial” European champion in 1934, though this title was first awarded officially only a year later. He was the only Auto Union driver who drove these cars without a break every year until 1939.

Hans-Joachim Stuck – Formula 1 star, Le Mans winner and very successful Audi touring car race driver – is looking forward to the first weekend in July. “For me it’s a highly emotional moment to drive my father’s car at this event!” And in fact Stuck’s car in Goodwood is the one driven by his father in his last race for Auto Union: an authentic replica of the 1939 Auto Union Type D twin-supercharger car.

Another welcome tradition that has grown up in Goodwood is for Nick Mason to be at the wheel of an Auto Union Silver Arrow. A superstar in his own right as drummer of the Pink Floyd rock group, Mason is a passionate enthusiast for historic racing cars. As the owner of an outstanding collection, his view is that these cars have to be seen in full flight, so to speak, before their true splendour can be appreciated. Mason has competed in many races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This year in Goodwood he will be at the wheel of the Auto Union Type C in which Bernd Rosemeyer took the European championship in 1936. This is Mason’s fifth appearance for Audi Tradition in Goodwood, a record that has earned him the title of “Auto Union’s last works driver”. Mason confirms: “It’s a great experience to get into this legendary car exactly 75 years after Rosemeyer’s great success.”

Nick Mason and Hans-Joachim Stuck competed at Le Mans – and so did Marco Werner. He was three times a member of the winning Audi team on the classic Sarthe circuit. This has gained him a place in the annals of motorsport history. Werner, who also triumphed in the major long-distance races held in Daytona and Sebring, represents Audi’s more recent successes at this festival of motorsport. He will drive the Audi R10 TDI, with which Audi became the first brand to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-engined car. Also on display by Audi Tradition in Goodwood are two pre-war DKW motorcycles: a DKW SS 250 (1937) and a DKW SS 350 (1939).

Mercedes-Benz:

Speed, power and style, visionary technology and an awareness of history, but not least elegance and luxury: those are the strengths of the Mercedes-Benz brand. And they are facets that add up to pure automotive fascination, drawing thousands of visitors to the Festival of Speed year after year. Mercedes-Benz Classic is a regular at the Festival of Speed and will also be participating at this year's event, which is scheduled to be held from 1–3 July 2011 under the theme “Racing Revolutions – Quantum leaps that shaped motor sport”. Its line-up of landmark racing cars is set to negotiate the 1.86-kilometre-long hillclimb circuit. And in 2011 Mercedes-Benz Classic will also be presenting the exhibition “125! years inventor of the automobile” which celebrates milestones of the brand's history, right back to its origins with Carl Benz's Patent Motor Car from 1886.

Motorsport revolutions

The concerted will to innovate embraced by Mercedes-Benz and the predecessor brands is thus reflected on the racetrack as well as in the exhibition. After all, Mercedes-Benz “Racing Revolutions” are the brand's racing cars with a string of victories to their name. And these successes were not just down to the drivers' skill but essentially also fruit of the engineers' tireless determination to come up with new solutions for the racing cars. Such developments have consistently been those “quantum leaps that shaped motor sport”, as echoed in the 2011 festival theme.

This year Goodwood will be host to legendary racing cars that are all set to tackle the hillclimb circuit. The line-up includes the W 165 Silver Arrow designed specifically for the Tripoli Grand Prix in 1939, the 300 SL (W 194) racing sports car from 1952 (claimed victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours) and the 190 2.5 16V EVO II touring car used in the DTM from 1990. The current Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, which will line up on the starting grid in the FIA GT3 Championship, will represent contemporary high-performance cars.

In keeping with the Festival's tradition, high-profile racing drivers such as Sir John Surtees, Paul Stewart, Klaus Ludwig and Bernd Schneider will take the cars around the hillclimb circuit.

The “125! years inventor of the automobile” exhibition starts with the foundation of automotive history – the Benz Patent Motor Car from 1886. Among the exhilarating engineering and style icons also on show in the exhibition will be the Mercedes Simplex 40 hp from 1902, a Mercedes-Benz 500 K Cabriolet B (W 29) from 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupé (W 198), a Mercedes-Benz 250 SE Cabriolet (W 111), a Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster (W 113) from the 1960s, a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 (W 116) launched in 1975 and the very latest Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé (C 197).

From art to the top flight of motorsport

The Festival of Speed, which was inaugurated in1993, was the brainchild of Charles Gordon-Lennox, Earl of March and Kinrara. The dedicated motorsport fan and Goodwood host bears the title Lord March. His grandfather, the former Earl of March and 9th Duke of Richmond, laid the foundation for the Festival. He was well-known in England as the car designer, engineer and racing driver Freddie March. In 1936 he organised the very first private hillclimb circuit in Goodwood Park. His grandson would rekindle this tradition more than 50 years later.

The Festival has developed from the inaugural event in 1993 into one of the unmissable highlights in the international cultural calendar for automotive fans. Racing and sports cars from across the ages play the symphonies of speed on the circuits for three whole days. Even the top flight of motorsport is represented: at least nine of this season's Formula One teams are scheduled to participate in Goodwood in 2011, including Mercedes GP and McLaren-Mercedes. A 2.5-kilometre-long rally course was added in 2007 to supplement the hillclimb course.

Leisurely afternoon stroll and automotive fascination

The Festival of Speed is just as much an exhilarating motorsport event as it is an opportunity to stroll along in style and lap up some automotive culture: from the pits, open to all visitors, through vehicle exhibitions in the park grounds, to the automotive works of art created every year by British sculptor Gerry Judah. His temporary sculptures, which are located right in front of Goodwood House, always centre around a single brand and its particular vehicles. In 2001 the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was the subject of the work of art at the then Festival of Speed.
