Hi Guys,

Went out on Saturday night to Eastern Creek to catch up with some friends and try my hand at getting some captures of the event.

It was incredibly wet, which was a mixed blessing, it let the underpowered cars (Toyota Corolla AE71/KE70) get out onto the full track & figure of eight to mix it up with the forced induction guys.

The flip side of this is that attendance was down in the carshow and spectators were few and far between.

I got caught out by the rain and the guys at the Hit and Run Drift Club welcomed me into their garage to take shelter while the worst passed.

Despite me intruding into their garage space they were welcoming and awesome fun - these guys, and the many others like them are what makes grassroots motorsport so good.

This one is excellent!

Have gotten another car after the E30? If you have, have you taken it to the track at all?

Unfortunately speed/tuning/awesomeness wasn't in the priorities list after the accident, I needed something cheap and reliable to get me to work and back without issue.
As such I'm currently rocking a '96 Liberty sedan (Auto).

I haven't stopped looking for a nice car, and will be buying a Mk3 supra from interstate (the dude is holding it for me till I'm ready to buy - Super nice!).

Its running a 1JZ with GT30 turbo @ 18PSI, and sits on a hot day at 270Rwkw without any issues. So I'm looking forward to getting into that when I can. At which point I will be doing drags, drifts and as many track days as possible.

Stretched tires, rolled and pulled fenders. Don't like that fad too much.

Did you use the Nikkor 35mm 1.8?

I love that lens for automotive stuff, and I like how you used its capabilities.

It's semi-water sealed too, has a rubber gasket besides the metal mount.

Ditto....there is a reason why you don't corner on your sidewall...

I believe part of the reason that makes stretched tyres undesirable on a pure performance level is what makes them more desirable on the drift scene. I dont mind the look of the sidewall stretched, but i cringe at the exposed beads that leave the wheel lip so exposed and look like they could pop on a decent hit.

I was about an inch away from making my way out there on Sat night, but the rain put me off.

Some idiot put the wrong size tire on his rims then another idiot that didn't know any better thought it was cool.

Is that how the fad was born?

There is a little arguement about the start of this / why people do it.

As I understand it the below are the main reasons. I personally believe there is such a think as too stretched, however that point is subjective.

1: Artificially stiffens the sidewall of (cheaper) higher profile rubber.
2: Helps fit the rubber and wheel under the guard to be slammed low.
3: Assists in lowering the point at which a lower powered car can break traction.

Yes, I adore my Nikkor 35mm 1.8, its a brilliant cheap lens.
That and my Tamaron 90mm.

I thought most people who went with the stretch deal is to tuck the tire which they pushed out to be flushed or even poking without rubbing....same with running the silly amount of camber for stance....It is funny too that you mentioned that it stiffens the sidewall of cheaper tire. The way I've heard it is that you use cheaper tire as they lack sidewall stiffness so they stretch easier.......

I have to say, now that I've spent sometimes in the VW forums like Vortex, these trends are pretty silly...

I think that is the difference between retards in VW's and people that use it to buy cheaper rubber to skid on.

yeah but drifting is still silly in itself....:D

Do people run time attack car with stretch rubber? I'd doubt that, nor would they I think run silly amount of "low" that even these drift car has...

A lot of the NOPI/drifting-borne trends are awful.

The stretched tire syndrome goes against all I learned in my younger years about matching/mounting tires to rims at my job in a garage.

RacingManiac

The tires themselves certainly don't like it, and sidewall certainly don't give you grip. The fact that you are stretching you are running wider(much) wider wheel width than you need(the VW crowd go down tire size to get the "stretched look")....

Be it as the "Moar low" stance crowd or the drifter crowd who does not want grip, they are not doing it to help performance....Same as the FWD car running the staggered wheel width front to rear(wider rear)...

I am not meant to understand their idea I think, they do all the stuff like that and still spend lots of money on engine tune, sway bar or big brake kit as if they'll be able to drive fast on the f-ed up suspension and tire setup....

It may not technically be stretched, but there are tyres out there, for instance a Toyo R888 that in a 245 profile is best suited for a 9 inch wide rim, whilst an average 245 would be suited to an 8 inch rim.

I'd only consider it a stretch when sidewall are folded over like below:

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk214/whiteballz/24092011%20Driving%20sports%20at%20EC/DSC_0681.jpg

I've had my tire roll over enough that wore almost half of the lettering on my 40 profile rubber when drop my front pressure too low for one autocross run(while the car was pushing badly), that does the guy no favor at all...unless thats what he is looking for...

Pro class (Overall) winner of the world time attack championship at eastern creek two years in a row.

Its not as much stretch as that S15 but its a different class of beast.

It's just as depressing over on the Nismo Z forum...stretched tires and rolling/pulling fenders on these limited edition cars. ugh
