hi
does anybody know how the hell can mercedes produce 617 hp from a 5.5 liter s/c V8 ?(actually that engine is the SL55's modified engine)
and SL65 amg has a biturbo V12 6.0 and it produce 612 hp,nearly the slr's horsepower and its Displacement is pretty high + it has a V12 and 2 turbochargers,
im really confused

( SL65 produce more torque tough-738 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm and SLR's : 575 lb-ft @ 3200-5000 rpm)

is it for the supercharger?

Different tuning, the SLR is more of a perfomance oriented car than the SL65. The V12 most likely has a much lower compression ratio too, and running low boost from the turbos, although it makes an increadable amount of low end torque.

making power is not directly related to the number of cylinders or the displacment of the engine, you can have a 1.6 liter honda I4 pushing 650hp just as you can have a 3 liter 2jz I6 or a 1.3 liter rotary. it depends on how the engine is built, how much pressure the F/I is pushing, cams, redline, compressions, how the intake and exhaust is set up, etc. :)

The SLR has a supercharged engine. With a supercharger it's pretty easy (especially with todays engines) to make well over 100hp per liter.

Just to correct something, the SLR's engine only shares the displacement with the SL55... it's a different block, different heads, and even a differnt lysolm-type supercharger. I don't even think they share one part.

It doesn't really seem too amazing to me that they've acheived this amount of. With forced induction especially. Koenigsegg has gotten over 800hp from a S/C 4.7 litre block, and that's not even near what might be considered the limit.

i thought it was 626 bhp it produces??? i am sure that is what clarkson said on top gear....

i still like the 2JZ, stock block goes up to 970hp with some crazy souping up.

i wonder how much one can soup up the engine of the SLR

i have a brochure of the SLR & it says that the SLR is 626hp not 617hp.

tuning. it should do the trick. By the way, talking about tunning, my beemer produces much less power than sposed to, and it really increased my 0-60 time. why? help plz.

How have you measured the power ?
How have you measured the time ?
... and ... what are you using as a baseline ???

626 DIN PS = ~617 SAE net bhp

Yep, displacement and number of cylinders doesn't dictate how much power an engine can make. Remember the F1 turbo era? 1.5 liter twin turbocharged V6's making anywhere from 1000-1500 hp.

another example of a small engine with big power is in the Jaguar XJ220

it only has a 3.5 liter V6 with a Turbo and it has 542bhp and 475lb-ft
and is capable of 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and top speed of 220mph!!!

hey anyone know what is the exact conversion formula from PS to HP and vice versa? I've been using hp to refer to engine for dunno-how-long-ago. I know PS measurement is close but what is the exact conversion? btw what is PS stands for? help me<---noob :(

PS
German: Pferdestärke = horse strength. It is defined as:

1 PS = 735.49875 W

hp
According to the most common definition of horsepower, one horsepower is defined as exactly:

1 hp = 745.69987158227022 W
The horsepower was first used by James Watt during a business venture where his steam engines substituted horses. It was defined that a horse can lift 33,000 pounds with a speed of 1 foot per minute: 33,000 ft·lb·min-1. (This is equivalent to approximately 15,000 kg at 30 cm.)

BTW, James Wat - another great Scot - so that's 2 you now know :)

I'll let you do the maths for the conversion factor, but you'll see why most don't bother, it's pretty close - Scottish horses ( prob Clydesdales ) were clearly stronger than German ones at the time !!!!

:D

I don't see how a 5.5 supercharged engine producing 600bhp+ is special in anyway.

The TVR 4.0 speed six with supercharger will put out more than 680bhp

And what about the BRM 1.5 supercharged putting out 500-600bhp, that's impressive.

i thought supercharger is just like turbocharger... the horsepower increase depend on how much boost you make your charger charge... supercharger can change their boost by changing puley and belt right?

you listed one reason in your question, thats RPM. look at the rpm range for the two torque ratings you mention. this is also one reason why the internals of the engine must be completely different.

An F1 engine is only 3 Liters, but revs to over 19,000 rpm and produces over 900hp normally aspirated. Or a honda K20A 2liter can easily make 250hp with an equal length exhasut manifold with peak HP coming at 7790rpm and torque at 7695rpm. also NA.

not the only reason for the added HP but an important factor.
