Thought I'd start a thread with questions on all aspects of motorsport. There's +1 rep to anyone with the correct answer.
First Question: Who is the only women driver to win a round of the World Rally Championship (keep quiet please Matra :) ).

SIMPLETON
06-05-2004, 07:12 AM
Michele Mouton

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 07:24 AM
Correct. Perhaps too simple?
In the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, for the first (and so far only) time, a women driver scored a world championship point driving for March. Who was she?

SIMPLETON
06-05-2004, 07:30 AM
Leilla Lombardi

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 07:36 AM
Also correct. Correct spelling is Lella Lombardi. She finished 6th and scored 0.5 points due to the race being red flagged early. Unfortunately, Simpleton, I can't give you a second rep point due to the way the rep system works. Well done anyway.
Guess I'll have to change tack.

Who won the 1985 European Touring Car Championship (clue: two drivers)? What car did they drive?

SIMPLETON
06-05-2004, 07:41 AM
Emanuele Pirro and Roberto Ravaglia, BMW 635CSi

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 07:47 AM
DarkPheonix, you're on the right track. Right make. Which of the Volvo 200 series cars (exact model?). However, way off track on the drivers.
Simpeton, wrong year. Ravaglia won in 1986 in a BMW 635CSi.

DarkPhenix

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 08:10 AM
Correct DarkPheonix, I thought that question might take a while to answer. The Volvo 240T was certainly an interesting car.
Sticking to touring car racing, but moving to New Zealand with this question.
Which drivers won both the 1986 and the January 1987 Nissan Mobil 500 on the Wellington street circuit and what car did they drive?

SIMPLETON
06-05-2004, 08:21 AM

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 08:26 AM
Ok, correct again, Simpleton.
I'll try something different.

motorsportnerd
06-05-2004, 09:28 AM
Answer: Giuseppe Farina. Alfa Romeo 158. Well done DarkPheonix.

1. 1987 in a Nissan Gazelle sharing with Grant Jarrett. Finished 19th outright and 7th in class (against BMW M3s).
2. Holden Torana XU1. Won a Queensland Touring Car Champ or two in the car and Dick Johnson's first Bathurst was in 1973 also in a Holden Torana XU1 sharing with Bob Forbes. Finished 5th.
Now Falc, do you know which car Johnson drove in the 1974 Bathurst 1000? It was for a factory team and it was European...
3. You said Australian, so that discounts Possum Borne. I think it was Greg Carr.

Very good....
Hist first race car was an FJ holden he then later moved into an EH before he got int the toroanas so partial credit for wide known history and that would be a Alfa GTV with John French...and from memory it didnt finish :)
3. Well there are amny greats but many cant rival his 5 championships...BUT he has also won nearly every class hes raced in at least once...and he also has the best rcord of any australian outside out country :) so there was mild liberty taken but notmany can boast a record like that :p argue if you must....:)

Falc, I assume you're saying Bourne is the most successfull Australian rally champion. Fair enough. Trust the Aussies to claim a successful NZer as one of their own though.
There are other top Aust rally drivers though, esp George Fury and Colin Bond, both of whom did well at Bathurst.

Thanks for the reminder on Johnson's first car. The XU1 stuck in my head for some reason. Forgot about his earlier Holdens. And right about the Alfa, and yes, it DNF'ed.

Now Falc, you must know the answer to question 14 in my quiz...

Also, lets ask a broad range of quiz questions and not concentrate just on Australian motorsport. I'll ask questions on a wide range in this thread...not just limit it to questions which only Aust motorsport fans can answer.

That leaves us with questions 6 and 16 still to go.
No New Zealanders out there know enough about NZ's motorsport heritage to know the answer to question 6? A clue, he drove a Brabham and died from a heart attack while competing at Bathurst in 1992.
And really, no one knows who the 1995 WRC champion was? He was from Scotland. Does that help? And Mustang123, you have the right manufacturer.

DP, you actually had it right earlier in the thread. But you were wrong in saying he never won the championship. He did...

So just one more left for this first set of twenty.

Who was the 1995 World Rally Champion and what car did he drive?
We know it was a Subaru. Which driver? I can give one more hint. He's driving a Ferrari at LeMans this weekend...

A new set of ten questions:

Formula One
1. Who was the 1993 World Champion?
2. Who was the 1978 World Champion?
3. Name the two Australians who have won the World Championship?
4. Prior to Michael Schumacher, who was the last Ferrari World Champion and in which year?
5. Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Benneton have dominated the results for the drivers world championship for some time now. Who was the last driver to win a World Championship for a team other than these four and which year?

Bathurst 1000
6. Name all the drivers NOT born in Australia who have won the Bathurst 1000? By my calculations there are 12 drivers who weren't born in Australia who have won the Bathurst 1000. They comprise 1 Finn, 1 Belgian, 1 Canadian, 1 German, 1 Swede, 1 Czech, 3 British and 3 Kiwi drivers.

7. A further 3 drivers not born in Australia should have been winners, but they were disqualified from the number 1 slot after the race. This happened in 1987 and 1997. Who were the three drivers (1 kiwi, 1 Brit, 1 Belgian)?

8. Name all the manufacturers which have won Bathurst 1000s (and their predecessor - the Bathurst 500 and Armstrong 500) since the first race in 1960? There are 9 manufacturers.

Both byronleehk and EvilPaladin got the answers to those questions.

4. Prior to Michael Schumacher, who was the last Ferrari World Champion and in which year?
Badly phrased question, sorry. Should have said, "prior to Michael Schumacher, who was Ferrari's last World Drivers Champion?
The answer is Jody Scheckter in 1979. Well done EvilPaladin
byronleehk suggested 1983, but Ferrari won the Constructors title in 1983, not the drivers title, sorry.

9. Name the only Japanese car to win the Bathurst 1000, and which years?
Answer: Nissan Skyline R32 GTR 1991 & 1992. Well done byronleehk.

Questions 6 & 7 are quite difficult. Some of the drivers in question 6 are now Australian citizens. One of the British born drivers is still a prominant front runner in the V8 Supercar series. The Canadian born driver is a four time winner of the race and a Ford hero. One of the kiwis is second on the list of all time winners behind Peter Brock. The Belgian was a former Ferrari driver. The Finn is a former Monte Carlo Rally winner. This may help.

6. Name all the drivers NOT born in Australia who have won the Bathurst 1000? By my calculations there are 12 drivers who weren't born in Australia who have won the Bathurst 1000. They comprise 1 Canadian....

The Canadian driver is indeed Alan Moffat. Well done IB4R. Another 11 drivers needed...

7. A further 3 drivers not born in Australia should have been winners, but they were disqualified from the number 1 slot after the race. This happened in 1987 and 1998. Who were the three drivers (1 kiwi, 1 Brit, 1 Belgian)?
The Brit was Steve Soper. The Belgian was Pierre Dieudonne. They "won" the 1987 Bathurst 1000 in a Texaco Ford Sierra RS500. They were, indeed, disqualified for feul irregularities and for illegal wheel arches. It was the race that got away from Ford. Instead awarded to Bathurst legend Peter Brock - his ninth victory. In 1987 the Bathurst 1000 was part of the World Touring Car Championship. BMW and Ford had fought the whole year. Apparantly they had an agreement between each other to run cars that didn't strictly comply with the World Touring Car Championship Group A rules. European scrutineers took a liberal approach to the rules. The Sierras had raced with the illegal wheel arches all year. There were all sorts of rumours about what the BMW teams got away with and they were disqualified at Monza for using fibreglass bonnets...
However when the Euro teams reached Bathurst they discovered that...1st the Australian scrutineers understood the rule book and actually used it. And 2nd that the Australian teams were none to keen to be beaten in their home race by illegal cars.
It was Frank Gardner who lodged the protest against the Sierras on the grounds that the wheel arches were wider and deeper than the road cars which allowed wider wheels and tyres to be used. Gardner ran the Australian BMW team in the event. He was backed up by most of the Australian teams (the Larry Perkins Holden team, the factory Australian Nissan team and the Dick Johnson Sierra team). The European BMW teams wanted nothing to do with it.
And, although it made the European scrutineers and officials look bad, the FIA had no choice but to enforce the rules and disqualify the Eggenburger Texaco Sierras.
The result suited the patriotic crowd, who booed the foreigners who dared win their race. However, the thing is the Texaco Sierras would have won even with legal guards. Stupid...
Anyway, good work Ferrari Tifosi.

Now anyone know who the NZer was? He currently drives for Team Kiwi in the Australian V8 Supercar championship. He was disqualified from the 1997 win for driving (if you can believe this..) too many laps. He was driving for the Diet Coke BMW team in a BMW 320i Supertouring. Paul Morris was his co-driver...

Well because im bored and i forgot too yesterday i will answer it Craig Barid....the same craig baird who used to race for the team brock operation when it started in 02 and was lost in the buy out that kees wheel done....

Some interesting facts about barid is he used to race for the stone brothers and also had a shock win and then soon ended

His impressive statts also include 93-94-96-97 NZ touring car champion
91/93 NZ gran prix winner and 4th at the 97 bathurst 1000

Also he has had a reliable run in the v8 super cars this yuear in the team kiwi car....
He will also be remberd as the 1 off ATCC drive with brocky in 02 where they came 2nd last with a car that gave them driveshaft problems during the race :)

Picture question 3. Name the drivers and cars.
The Green Mustang is driven by Dick Johnson
The white Volvo no doubt would of been robbie Franzoviks car
And the r31 Skyline could of either been Glenn Setons or George Furys...if i rember correctly Glenn Setons first season came with the intorduction of franzovicks Volvo and the 2 team cars where identical to look at but Seto did have a few rounds off....and the white helmet makes it very hard to make a posative id...you cant see setos TOP GUN sunnies or Furys Terry Toweling hat :D

7. A further 3 drivers not born in Australia should have been winners, but they were disqualified from the number 1 slot after the race. This happened in 1987 and 1997. Who were the three drivers (1 kiwi, 1 Brit, 1 Belgian)?

Oops. The question really should have said 1997. The winning car was not excluded from the 98 Bathurst 1000.
But, yes Falc, it was Craig Baird. 1997 should have been a successful year for him 1st across the line in the Bathurst 1000 only to be disqualified. However, 4th in the Australian 1000 a couple of weeks later made up for it (remember there were two Bathurst 1000s in 1997 - so that was a trick in itself).
Apologies to anyone confused by my mixing up of 1997 and 1998.

Picture question 3. Name the drivers and cars.
Green Ford Mustang - Dick Johnson.
White Volvo 240T - Robbie Francevic.
White/blue Nissan Skyline DR30 (its not an R31 GTR) - George Fury. The way to tell it is Fury is by the racing number 30 - Fury raced with number 30, Seton with number 15.
Anyway, well done Falc.

A few years too early.

Not unless my Autosport source is wrong. The British driver was a former double F1 world champion. The other driver's sirname starts with "P".
