Over all? The new caddilac 4 door that uses the LS6. What is it.. the CTS-V?

It's practical: it sits 4 comfortably
It gets decent gas milage
It's classy: How can you say no to a caddy?
It's powerful: I mean... what.. 350HP?

Overall the best car built in America

If for some reason we are going by performance only as some seem to do, then I'd have to say the ford GT or Saleen S7.

I can't pick just one, so here's my list:

The original Shelby Cobra (both the 289 and 427 CID)
The 67-69 Camaros (Specially the Yenko cars)
The 65 Corvette Split Window Coupe
The Saleen S7
The Ford GT
The Viper
The C6 Corvette (it's the best performing factory Vette yet)
The Shelby Mustangs

Give me time, I'll add more...

nice to see this thread being reopened, gave an opportunity to read the excellent posts of our long gone forum dinosaur called Motorhead.
and yes the split window was 63, but that was the only real difference with the 64. It is just a bit more rare.
My favourite?
Duesenberg SSJ, when a double OHC engine was already part of the music.

Not to mention that most people had the spilt window replaced with a standard one, making them even "rarer" ,

My favorite would be the 67 vettes, 427 ne1?

Your list is good, but you left out the original Ford GT that beat Ferrari at LeMans four years in a row in the late '60s.

You could also add the ZR-1 Corvette series (the King of the Hill) 1990 to 1995. Double overhead cam 32 valve V-8 with HP from 435 to 485. A Ferrari killer in its day.

BTW, the original Stingray Corvette was the 63 (not 65) split window coupe. I know. I drove one. It must be on the list. A classic car.

Just for the record, it is debatable whether the original GT 40 was an English or an American car. The 7 litre versions beat Ferrari in 1966, while in 1967 the MKIV was the winning car, a slightly different car altogether. After the rule changes of 1968 the "old" 5 litre GT40 qualified as a sportscar and could then beat (in this case chassis #1075 twice) the prototypes in 1968 and 1969 which were restricted to 3 litres. This concerned not only Ferrari who put in a meagre effort with the 312P but also Porsche with the 908's and the Alfa 33.

Just to put things in perspective: SPEED VISION TV recently put together a muscle car shootout where all the original muscle cars were track tested. These were the big block honkers. Dodge Hemi 426, Olds 455, Mustang 429, Pontiac 421 GTO, Chevy Camero LS6. They even had the American Motors AMX and the Buick muscle car. No one was left out.

The Camero won and turned 13.7 in the quarter.

Note that the 346 ci Corvette C5 with the A4 automatic (with 3.15 rear end gears) turns a 13.1 everyday on the way to work. The C6 Vette A4 will lower that to 12.7 or so.

These cars are docile daily drivers that will top end at 175 or better and pull .94 on the skid pad while the six speaker Bose is playing Jethro Tull or whatever one choses from the 12 disk changer.

They are the best ever American car.

BTW - forget mentioning modified this and that. Lingenfelter Performance Engineering can put a twin turbo package on the C5 A4 that makes 730 HP, turns the 1/4 around 9.5 sec, and drives on the street as if nothing had ever happened.

ZR1 HP numbers were not near the figures you posted. There were more like 385-410hp. The Z06 is an all around better car anyway...

The Ford Mustang came first, as a 1964 1/2 year model. The Shelby Mustangs , the 350 and 500 GT were race ready street legal cars with better suspentions, breaks and hotter engines. They came a bit later.

Here here on the 67.

BTW thank you very much KKO for keeping things straight about the Vette here on UCP.

And BTW I do believe that the original Shelby Cobra had a large influence on the automotive world then... and now.

In the past 50, the Corvette has been the most prominent American car. The C6 is the best one since the late 50s pre-Stingray vettes.

But the true best American car is none other than the DUSENBERG.

A Cadillac would also be in my top 5 or top 10 list.
In fact, I recently bought what is probably my all-time favorite Cadillac (along with the '68-76 limousine models)... 1969 Fleetwood Brougham. Powerful (375 hp, 525 lbs/ft torque), reliable, smooth engine. Very roomy interior thanks to its 133" wheelbase and 228.5" overall length (19-feet). Huge trunk and styling that (especially these days) turns heads. Here are a few pics of my "new" '69...
