View Full Version : My new race car

It's a 1970 mg midget,
It has:
rollbar, competition seat, racing harness, racing steering wheel, roll bar, 1275 cc engine, twin 1.25" SU carbs, competition cam, high performance starting coil, front racing lever shocks(modified spring), a little negative camber, rear tube shocks, lowered 3 inches, axle brace( so wheels dont shift out and rub on the fender), 13" minilite center knock-offs with 13" by 8" yokohama DOT slicks on them. I've put on a new header, and I'm modifying the straight exhaust that came with the car by puttingg a glass pack on it to keep the noise down. I also added the windshield, and needs to work on the wiring so the lights work. If i get another truck soon, my dad and I are planning racing it in a couple of weeks, after we make it street legal, we don't really need to truck to race it.

does the car have any competition history?

johnnynumfiv
06-21-2004, 11:59 AM
It has never been raced, the man who originally owned and who was going to race it, died, then it was sold in an estate sale to the man who I bought it from, he put some stuff on and only drove it around the lake that he lived on once. If i get a new truck or make it street legal, it will be raced on june 27th.

Looks good, it is the standard BMC engine, what sort of BHP do you think you have, about 90-100 or so?

$2500, but i'm planning on putting around a grand into the car.

johnnynumfiv

I'm not sure about the hp, there is a place that i can bring it to to get dynoed, once i get everything done to it that i want, i'll get it dynoed and i'll post it for you. But the stock bmc engine only had about 43 hp.

Are you sure, UCP's mini has the same engine, and does with 1 carb already 61. Aren't you not talking about the 1000 cc engine?

just an update on the car:
can't go racing tomorrow, it overheats( have to check the amount of the coolant), tires rubbing against fenders in rear(need to take the lowering kit out), carb's are sticking( putting 1.5" SU's with K&N filters on) but have to change the head to accept the big carbs, while loading the car, the jack that was holding it up broke, and part of the trailer went up into the car, which made the seat come out, then the trailer bent the exhaust which i just fabricated, so its out of action for a while.

How much does it weigh?

johnnynumfiv
06-30-2004, 09:51 AM
The car weighs about 1500 lbs, I'm planning on taking more stuff out to lighten it, since i put the windshield, and another seat in, it needs to go on a diet.

johnnynumfiv
08-15-2004, 09:45 PM
Just an update: I ported the head, put MGB carbs on, modified the intake manifold, put in a new oil filtering system, put roller rockers on, put in a new drivers seat, modified the rollbar, put K&N filters on, made a new exhaust system. Now, I have to fabricate a cold air intake box, and make it street legal. :)

Well, that throws out my plexiglass idea.

johnnynumfiv
09-16-2004, 02:26 PM
nope, its not street legal yet. I have to replace the steering rack, there is something wrong with it. My dad found out about it during a race and have major understeer, and spun out and couldn't go at any high speed. Then the rear axle started to leak. So I have to work on that before modifing the car so its street legal.

A little update:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/johnnynumfiv/DSCN2604.jpg
First I made a braket for the fuel cell out of 1x2 tube steel, then found out I had to drop the stock fuel tank(it was time for a fuel system change, the gas was black and rust :o ), dropped the tank, drilled the necessary holes, mounted the fuel cell, then started setting up the plumbing. Its made with -6AN line with the appropriate fittings. The system goes, out of the fuel cell, fuel filters, fuel pumps, two lines come together, then to the fuel pressure regulator near the oil filter up front, then onto the carbs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/johnnynumfiv/DSCN2606.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/johnnynumfiv/DSCN2603.jpg
For the battery, I took aluminum stock cut it so it fits the contours of the battery, took two pieces of the 1/2" and layered them and drilled the holes and bolted it in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/johnnynumfiv/DSCN2607.jpg

I did all this work and a lot more over the past 3 days for a race at LimeRock, my dad got around Turn 1 and the front brakes totally locked up, end of the race for us. :(

I replaced the steering rack, added camber bushings up front, resealed the rear end, now just to fix the brakes. And a hub/ rear axle conversion is coming up shortly, just got the wheels back from powercoating and they are getting wrapped with yokohama A032R's.

I was supposed to be dropped on H&R coilovers by now, with a VR6 swap sitting in my uncle's garage with the block sent out to get bored over. Now I'm looking at a cheap spring/shock combo and there's no motor in sight for a long time. Fuggin' cars...

I didn't see the apply online thing, but after talking to some drivers after noticing that some of the major groups that are usually there weren't invited back. Edelbrock, Ferrari of Long island were some of the ones that weren't there this year.

Here's some new pics of it with the new tach on it. I'm still collecting parts to put the motor together and trying to figure out a way to rewire the car so it eliminates the stock wiring harness. Once I figure out the wiring, I'm going to be making a dash out of aluminum for it.

Are you sure that tacho's big enough jonny?! ;)

Does it not obstruct your vision somewhat being mounted so high up? Is it a common thing on MGs to have the tacho on the outside of the car? Can't remember seeing one mounted like that before.

Looking very sweet though. :)

johnnynumfiv
06-10-2006, 12:55 PM
If I went any smaller, it'd be pointless because I wouldn't be able to see it and try to watch the course. It doesn't obstruct it at all since I'm looking over it. It's common with cars with the windshields taken off, I'm thinking about taking mine off but it's a pain in the ass.

Wonderful little car. Wish I had something in the same vein to autocross in, as I can't really risk damaging my Subaru... Wouldn't be as much fun to drive as the little MG anyhow. Best of luck getting it sorted.

What damage can you do other than hitting a cone or burning rubber (if that counts as damage)?

johnnynumfiv
06-20-2006, 03:53 PM
There have been some very close calls of cars almost flipping over. Hitting the cones has done some body damage and paint damage to the cars, also hitting the timing system boxes can do some pretty good damage.

Sweet looking dash, very functional. Does the tach have a shift light on it ?.
We have just bought another race car. Half the fun is building it. Was your fuel cell foam filled, they are bloody cheap in the us compared to australia

Here a link to our new car, its half built already similar to your MG, we have built race cars from scratch and its certainly costs heaps more.
