i dont know anything about ALMS, so what's with the huge spoilers?

NAZCA C2
06-27-2004, 07:18 PM
They are race cars, the spoilers add downforce. Without the spoilers the cars would'nt be nearly as fast in the corners and would'nt be stable on the high speed straights. Unlike ricer car airplane wing spoilers these cars actually use spoilers that work.

well, i know how what a spoiler does, it's just that not every kind of race car has a huge spoiler like that (I can only think of NASCAR at the moment, though)

it would be a bad move to be racing without spoiling systems. Without downforce your car has too much lift, even at the 180 mph nascar goes. Result: tires lose grip with the road and you piss yourself as you're careening out of control

last time i checked nascar does have spoilers... in fact i think theres some sort of regulation on them. They're very small and located at the back end of the exoskeleton. I think they're kept at a 70 degree angle or something...

looks like there are a lot of hairpins.

In most race cars u want the spoiler to be as tall as possible so that the spoiler isn't affected by air coming off of cars in front of u. Spoiler height is usually regulated. Some old Can-Am and F1 cars used really high spoilers so that the spoilers would be in clean air and produce max downforce.

The Saleen was cool, not as loud as I thought it would be. The Vette's and the Murcielago were much louder.

70s theory.

Fluid dynamics are better understood and creating an integral lift from the body proved more effective than separate wings. Combining the body flow and the wing gave a better over result.

BUT, the real reason the tall wings were made illegal was the willingness for the supports to break - no mater HOW strong they made them, they were breaking. Losing THAT amount of downforce was VERY dangerous back then as the understanding of under-body airflow was so crude that these things were flying wings ( unlike todays inverted wings :) )

The race was awesome.Although it was dissapointing that there were no 550's (Prodrive) and only one 360. Oh and one Audi R8. No Panoz lmp not even the Batmobile. But watching the Dyson lead the Champion Audi early in the race was good stuff. The audi couldn't pass him, I thought we had an upset coming. The murcielago was awsome, but no match for the Super vettes. The panoz Gt look really good in 2nd till it retired. Well I got some pictures too, I' ll try post later as it will be my first try ;)

THAT made me do a double take and had to go check the ALMS website.

I thought at first it was THIS (mms://windows.streamuk.com/dyson/dc07_lan.wmv) Dyson cleaning up at the track :)
45% more power has to make it competitive :)

I might have been. I have a terrible memory and I watched the touring cars, GT and the ALMS race so it's all jumbled up in my mind

Nascar racers don't have big spoilers.

I don't think anyone has said it yet, but ALMS stands for American LeMans Series ( I think ) :)

Yeah, the 8 cylinder version is a special for the US market.
They couldnt' convince people to buy the smaller more efficient ones.
So they sell it as an 8-cylinder and planning to bring out a SUV version next year :)

I was at that race and I'll be at it again this year, as well as at Road America, Lime Rock, Mosport, and possibly Infineon.

GO PANOZ!!
