I went to the Barrett-Jackson auction at the Petersen for a few hours this afternoon.

I was told by one of the staff that this 1964 356 C Carrera 2 set a world's record, selling for just over $170,000 USD.

Wow !

Best regards,

Steven

I meant worlds record for a Carrera 2.

I think the 'world's record' for any car, is the approx $21 Million USD paid by a Japanese collector for a Ferrari 250 GTO, back in the hey-day of the early 90's.

Jerry Seinfeld? Nope, one of the most Die-hard Porsche enthusiasts in America. He recently converted an old warehouse in NYC into a garage to house 5 of his Porsches. The pad is complete with a 42" Plasma TV, a gameroom, kitchen and bathroom; ya know, for when his cars need some loving.

It appears I am mistaken about a Ferrari going for 21 Million. I have the figure 21 Million stuck in my head, but that's definately not the not correct price for the 250 GTO I was thinking of.

The details, from Ferrari expert Michael Sheehan follow below. What is amazing is how the market exploded when non 'car collector' speculators entered, then collapsed when they left.

Best regards,

Steven

"The Ferrari madness of the late 1980's peaked in 1989 with the sale of 250 GTO S/N 3909 to Kato in Japan for $13,837,500. The only higher price ever paid for a Ferrari was $17,000,000, paid in January 1990 to Arnold and Werner Meier of Switzerland for their 330 GTO, S/N 4561 SA.

By 1990, the collector car market had sarted to collapse, and 250 GTO S/N 3607 was sold to Giorgio Perfetti in Switzerland for what seemed like a bargain at $9,588,780.

The market bottom was defined in January 1993 with 250 GTO S/N 4219 going to Brandon Wang for $3.5m and, in Septmeber of 1994, with the ex–Kato car (S/N 3909), previosuly purchased for $13,837,500, going to John Collins of Talacrest for $2.7m."

mmmm....250 GTO, I love that car. It's worth so much because, first of all its a very much desired car by Ferrari enthusiasts and second there were only 39 made (Due to the brilliant work of Mr. Enzo Ferrari convincing the sports car governing body that the 250 GTO was an "evolution" of the 250 SWB, and therefore not having to build 100 units).

The world recore for any car being sold at auction was the 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO was sold for 20 million GBP which is like 40 million USD and 45 million CDN, I do believe that is a world record for the Carerra 2, I have never seen one being sold for over 100,000. As for the Mclaren F1 who gives a F--k, the cars built by the british thats all I can say.

Forza Ferrari

Good post, thanks for the information, but that last sentence ruined it. If you don't like the McLaren, but "all [you] can say" as justification is that it's "built by the british", that's a pretty damn lame argument.
