Personally, I love EVO, its got all I want to know about all the cars I want to know about - only criticism would be a lack of racing news, but there are other mags for that - autosport is another good one but I dont usually bother buying it, just a quick flick through before I head to the counter with that months copy of EVO
:D :D
So, what do you reckon? - I know you like reading about cars, and peoples thoughts on them cos otherwise this site wouldnt exist! How about magazines not available in the UK? They are the only ones I read since I'm english, although I live in Belgium they are still realtively easy to get hold of, but not so for other foreign publications.

I like to get TOPGEAR mag which is,regretfully, not available in my country for individuals to buy!!
It is only available in the british council in Damascus:Only one issue every month & it is not available for individuals to take them outside the center!!
Of course we have arabic car magazines but they aren't even comparable to western mags.

Evo is a good choice . . .

also buys include CCC (cars and car conversions)
Autosport.

I used to get TopGear all the time, but it seems to have gone all mature and boring ;). TopGear on TV on the other hand is unmissable . . . quite a turnaround.

What sort of stuff do you get in arabic mags then? There are a few belgian mags available but they tend to be all about modding cars, and I'm really not into that shit. Plus due to strict laws on engine mods it all body kits and air brushing... puhhhleeaze!!

Car and Driver has to be my choice for my personal favourite car mag. To be honest though, I haven't tried many other magazines. As for arabic car magazines, some of them are quite good actually. Most of them however are pretty outdated.

I download episodes of Topgear (the TV show) all the time from the internet. Really nice show, especially that episode they compared the Zonda to the Murcielago !!

I'm in Canada as well, and while Car & Driver and Road & Track are fine mags, EVO kicks their butts plenty. You can get it at Chapters. Unfortunately because it's an import it costs approx. $13.00 CAN, but it's worth the bucks. Trust me! Give it a try.

4 words: Auto, Motor und Sport.

And also "Car" for the nice pictures and for the fact that they, instead of writing a normal technical and factual article, write an entire story about driving a certain car.

I'll probably get a copy of EVO soon as per your advice !! But $13 is quite expensive honestly, that actually buys you Car and Driver AND Swank, which is a very interesting combination !!

I like EVO, and occasionally the magazine called Car. I also like specialty mags like Forza and some others.

Australian car mags are crap. The two, namely Wheels and Motor are virtually the same in content as I believe they are owned by the same company. Wheels is probably the better. Motors journos are more interested in trying to sound clever and witty rather than giving you a real understanding of the pros and cons. I think they actually think we know or care who they are, with the use of nick names and personal information. Some of them would be better writing for Ralph or one of those crappy magazines. One month a car will be be rated well, then the following month, in comparison with something else it is derided. They all consider themselves to be hot shot drivers and think we all drive at maximum speeds and race our cars fro one destination to another. Ive largely stopped buying Motor unless there is something of particular interest but for Oz cars there isnt much choice.

I'm a huge fan of EVO, but it costs like 14 bucks in Canada so I only ever buy one if there's a really good issue. :(

Personally, i buy 4 car mags, Motor, Wheels, Car and Top Gear. Since Motor and Wheels are both aussie, their cheap, but i pay $22.00 for the latest copy of Car and $20.00 for Top Gear, bloody ridiculous!

i buy these sorts of car mags for different reasons. Motor because it is an aussie EVO, minus the $17.00 price tag, and thats gotta be good. Wheels because i find it relevant to my area, they focus on more issues that face the Aussie driver, and also help to find out how some cars europe raves about fare in rougher, tougher aus. TopGear because i find the articles informative and amusing. and Car for their sheer driving, keyboarding and photographic skill, creating a superb piece of literature.

Bit of a bummer over here really, i can't get Auto Motor und Sport, or C&D or R&T, so i've really got nothing to compare too, unless we want to compare Street Machine to R&T.....

Well magazines are somthing i collect i have near 200 hundred lieing about the most i have is street machine whic used to be a fine mag till about 95 i still get it its an enjoyable read although seems out of touch from what it used to be about (affordable real world cars mostly muscle cars and how to modify them and not WHO will modify them for you) i feel much the same about street heat which now has lost the plot also. I occasonly get wheels or motor depending on if they grab my attention or not (most of the time they dont) and i find they wuinge a bit too much for my liking. I also get performance ford (australia and new zeland) I like the cars and they have quite a bit of tech in them like lately they are having a multi part storie about the GT40 kit cars how to put them together and picture of the various stages they are built in and how to restore an XY falcon where they show common rust areas and make suggestions on things you can do for your restoration project.
Fast 4s and other mags like that are a joke their idea of tech in the one hot 4 mag ive got is stero systems and an air filter comparo. My Old man has some from the 80s and they are actully quite good mags and i like the cars in them too (their buzz boxes rather then rice burners)
Holden mags used to quite good although ones depicting holdens in general have been replaced commadore mags and they get a bit samey after a few issues and i have found lacking in tech.
I have a love for american machinery and there fore a love for most american car mags sadly they are in general a little to rich to be bying monthly:(

I currently get, Automobile, Road and Track, and Autoweek. Tough choice, Autoweek gets the news ahead of the big boys a lot so i'll have to go with that

I think EVO is great, I also get Automobile. Ill pick up the occasional Road & Track or Car & Driver depending on if they are testing anythingreally interesting.

Anyone remember the short-lived AutoBuff? .... from about 15 or 20 yrs ago, they'd have really hot exotics or streetrods with topless babes sprawled all over them. If I remember the articles sucked but the pix were awesome !!

I am, I just don't buy those mags on a regular basis, I will pick up the occasional copy of Hot Rodding, Streetrodder and Mopar Action, but the problem I have with these are they are so biased toward 1 particular manufacturer .... kinda like "SL500" j/k, but in reality there is only so much you can read on cars that were built 30 yrs ago before it gets repetitive.

It is rare to see an article on an older car that makes you say " damn, thats freakin' cool!".

10-19-2003, 05:19 AM
Some of the tech articles they used to hav ein popular hot rodding were great they told you what you need to do to drop a t-5 in a mustang mods for eccomy for power and so on they used to be fantastic mags just so full of info but now they aint as great their ok my old man got a hot rod mag and ill happily read it but i havent bought one in a long time.

I think that nothing comes even near to EVO. Yes, its expensive but worth every penny. I'm suscribed, but their "rest of the world" price is so high I'm paying more than USD$10 a month (which is newstand price in US) AND I get it two months late. Nevertheless, its the best.

The other one I buy quite a bit is Sport Compact Car. I particularly like their "ultimate street car shootout" although the fact they have splitted it into two issues sucks!!!

I don't like the layout in Top Gear and Car, although they are quite good. I read a lot of R&T and CD before I got to EVO, and there is simply no way I can compare them. I might be buying one every six months.

I'm sure that "Auto, Motor und Sport" and "Sportauto" are very good altough I'm not fluent in either german or french.

I started reading Motortrend back in the early 90s, but it got to the point where it got bland and they only ever tested minivans and SUVs. I bailed on that and went to R&T for a few years which was good, but kinda lacking in a lot of ways. While overseas a year and a half ago, I discovered CAR, and have been reading that since. The stories are exceptionally written, and the pictures are art. Love every issue. I also was recently given a subscription to MT again, for a gift. I was suspicious at first, but former CAR editor Angus McKenzie is now the MT editor-in-chief, so things have gotten better.

i cant read Car and Driver. They are to political. Very pro-american, and its rare that european cars will win comparisons when they are clearly better than the competition. Automobile is good, but I never got into it.

2 mags a month, then supplemented by UCP, fills just about all the car info i can handle in my life. oh, and speed channel to supplement as well.

I'm open to most car mags. But I often get Road and Track, Modified Luxury and Exotics and CAR. They're all great, and every so often I'll get the Dupont Registry to browse the exotic car ads there.

I'm subscribed to Car and Driver, Road and Track, and Automobile Magazine. Although they are all excellent, I enjoy R&T and AutomobileMag the most because they have unique articles such as the fun drives section in AutomobileMag. It just seems so much more interesting to me when they cover a section of road that is really worth driving on for fun. Also I love Fun Factor in Road and Track, the rating system seems incredible. In addition to these magazines, I have never read EVO, but I will look to pick one up in the future, from the review sounds mind blowing.

Anybody read winding road? ( http://www.windingroad.com ). I saw it advertised on UCP earlier today.

It's a free digital car mag. It's got around 70 pages, half of which are adverts mind, but it's a free car mag, none the less. Comes in PDF format.

I've been reading Winding Road for a few months now, and it's really quite good for something thats completely free. They do seem to have a curious affinity with the Mini Cooper S, though.

Car - Excellent magazine i rate it the best car magazine in the world
Top Gear - Different, and very funny
Evo - Very good lots of technical information, and exclusives but just seems a little too arrogant for me to rate it as my favourite

they would be my favourite magazines...

but then again i like MOTOR and WHEELS because they have more relevant Australian content in them...

i cant read Car and Driver. They are to political. Very pro-american, and its rare that european cars will win comparisons when they are clearly better than the competition. Automobile is good, but I never got into it.

Show me the last time they declared an American manufacturer a winner. If you have been reading the magazine in the past 10 years you would see that mostly, they are bashing every American automobile (with the exception of the corvette and mustang), while they get bashed for declaring BMW's as winners in 90% of comparison tests. And they are political, in a politically-incorrect humorous way. And yes, I am subscribed to Car and Driver.
There was a time when I would spend $10 for Evo and Car, but then I discovered something better and cheaper: UltimateCarPage.com
All these guys deserve some credit for providing us with such a great place to indulge our car addictions :)
I also enjoy reading classic car magazines (Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, etc), and lately Motor Trend Classic and the mags from Hemmings.

Im subscribed to Motortrend, Road and Track but I always try to get my hands on ricer mags like Super Street/Import Tuner/Turbo/Sport Compact Car if theres some cool cars/articles.
As for foreign mags I get a little Top Gear when Im at the airport.
And Im a fan of European Ricer mags like Maxpower, Fast Car, and Redline magazine because theyre always 200-300 pages of crazy modded cars, hot girls, and sometimes they come with Beanies or DVDs.
