I saw an advertisement for a 1991 Turbo MR2 with 83,000 km about 50k miles for 16,000 CDN which is i think 12,000 USD or 6,500 pounds

I know this is WAY over the value of the car, which is I think 4500-6000 cdn if it's in near perfect condition.

Any insight as to what I should do?

I'm thinking if the owner drops the price to 5-6 thousand cdn ill buy, obviously after checking vehicle history and taking it to a mechanic ... 13 year old car with only 50k miles? kinda fishy

any particular quirks I should look for on a 91 MR2 turbo?

its turbo, thats why its more expensive than normal 13yr cars.......+ it doesn't have many km's for its time. it might as well have some mods on it(might not give much but its probably something), it sounds fishy to have less km's but sometimes can be true, my cousin bought a 91 chevy SS for i think $8000USD with only 21k miles(33600 km) on it, the engine looks good(no leaks or strange sounds) and so does the interior.

I think US $12,000 is way too much money for it. It is used, with 50K miles and made in 1991.

My friend's 1992 Mitusubishi 3000GT VR-4 had only 30K miles a couple of months ago. But that's because his dad didn't use it much when the car was in Venezuela.... Being this said it could be possible to really have 50K miles... Although you should check that out... Is there a way to know if it really has only 50K or they cheated on it?

on older cars you can actually roll the miles back by either going in reverse or attaching the worm gear to a drill to roll it back

you can "check" to see if the condition of the drivetrain matches that of the odometer
if the engine and transmission components are heavily worn similar to that of a vehicle with hundreds of miles on a car reading 50k then you can be pretty sure the owner has "cheated"

what im more intrested in is what i should pay for it if everything comes out clean

i searched on the net and the wholesale value of a 1991 turbo mr2 has a maximum value of 4000 USD around 5300-5600 CDN, thats assuming everythign is in perfect condition

Edmunds TMV lists $3700 USD
Comsumer guide lists $3600-$4300 USD

Epinions has users post the price they got their car for and althoug there was 1 user who bought the 1991 MR2 from a private party for 7500 USD the majority payed from 3500-4500 USD
I only included the listings which were from the last couple years due to depreciation

now that i see it, it is overpriced, the guy probably thinks that car is gonna be kept as classic or something. if you like it and feel like payin that much for it, check it first, look for anything that looks bad, maybe even drive it around the block:). i'd say less than $10000 CDN.

I'll be one here the first to say that's actually a pretty good deal. MR2 turbos are getting very rare, and have always held their value very well, especially in Canada. In the states, they tend to cheaper, because there were more of them and they didn't hold their worth as well as in Canada. A few people have actually imported their MR2s from the US because (even with the exchange rate) it's been cheaper.

I've always been interested in them, and I've followed their pricing for a long while (I look at least once a month for them in my local car classified, just out of curiosity). I've spend a lot of time with the BC MR2 club as well. Considering that it's a fairly rare, low-volume sports car that most owners take very good care of, 83,000km doesn't sound suspicious. In fact, it sounds very good, considering that most are around 130,000. This taken into consideration, I can easily see why this would justify a two or three thousand more than what you would see elsewhere.

I would be insulted if I was offered $4500-$6000 for it. Hell, there are often quite a few MK1 n/a MR2s for around $4500 in Vancouver. Turbos are the cream of the crop, at the other end of the spectrum, and I've seen them go for over $20,000 before.

Keep in mind that what I've said is a little bit more relevent than the price opinions that someone from the US might offer. Those lucky bastards can find MR2s for waaay cheaper where they live ;)

but i aint gonan come up with 20 grand anytime soon and even if i was i prolly woudlnt spend all of it on a 91 mr2 turbo, although it is an amazing car (one of my fav) it doesnt change the fact its 13 years old and 20 grand is over half of its msrp when back in 91

with that said i'd have no problem spending that much if i had won the lottery (even if the prize money was exactly 20 grand) OR if i made that much from the stockmarket with an original investment say ... 10 grand

on a side not my brother's friend made almost 30 grand from original investment of 8k on the stockmarket. i know this is not a sure thing there's a great deal of risk but as you learn in basic business, risk = reward. obviously lots of research, hard work, analysing, and sometimes dumb luck is involved but i figure at my age if i dont gamble then ill be 40 something and chained to a mortgage, family, funding for kid's education ... yadi yadi yada

this is another one i found, seems to be really good except the interior looks kinda shabby, but after 13 years its in relatively good condition

still dont have that much though, at most i have about 3 grand, i can borrow about 5000 from parents which ill have to pay back with intrest...
