yes... you can, but you should find out what is more convenient for your car a Supercharger or a Turbo (you can have both, but the difference is really insignificant)
What kind of car do you have... that way we can tell you what is better... and how much money would you be willing to spend on this ?

excellent, i had always pondered turboing my father's 2001 Chrysler Sebring when i get a hold of it in about a year

yeah, installing forced aspiration unit on an engine doesnt affect the transmission in any direct way
if you dont have enough room in the engine bay then thats a different story
one thing you should consider before isntalling either a turbo or S/C is what type of driving you plan to do mostly
if you just want a bit more power from your daily commute a S/C is the less costly option since you won't need significant power increase and S/C don't suffer from turbo lag
if you plan on high horsepower application then you prolly should get a turbo since generally turbo's give more high end power
