Hi everyone, I was just wondering what is the weight of the original (1959-2000) Mini, Mini Cooper and Cooper S. I also couldn't find the cars' weight distribution, all I have heard is that they are well balanced and were succesful in different rallies (was their an all wheel drive version?).Any help will be much appreciated.

The Rally Monte Carlo was won three times. Four wheel drive systems did not hit rallying until the early 1980s.

I could but the UCP mini owner would certainly know much more about it :) as he just showed before my reply became active.

The original dry-suspension Minis were 1294lbs ( 587kg ) and the hydrolastic ones were 1392lbs ( 635kg )

No they were never 4WD prodcued, tho a prototype was built by BL with a Mini engine in front AND rear.
Many grass track racers do the same now - but using MUCH lighter bike engines and transmission ( Mini engine/transmission weighed 333lbs !! ). Great to watch :)

erm,, in full race rally trim the weight distribution was all to the front.
Standard was aroung 60/40, but by the time it's lightened and converted to beam rear axle it can get to 70/30. Its why you'll often see a Mini on track with the rear lifted on braking/cornering.

The Mini success was based on the ability to enter a corner with HUGE understeer and scrub it off and then drag it out of the corners - all a consquence of the large forward bias.. So the back didn't do much - and being VERY short wheelbase didn't contribute much to direction :)

The Ferrari F40 is lighter than a modern day mini. One of the great components for pure exhilaration.

A delivery truck is lighter than the modern day BMW 0.5 series Mini :)

But once you put the average delivery man in it the weight will skyrocket :)

Thanks a lot guys.
But I've got another question - when were the hydrolastic ones introduced? Did they have better handling, was the weight gain worth it? Did those car use the same engine?
