Picked up excellent 63 Chelle, but it has one problem, probably with powerglide transmission

engine stalls when placed in gear unless idle is at 2,000 rpm minimum.
already checked for vacuum leaks and intake leaks.
timing checks good, dwell is slightly out of tolerance (not enough to matter).
engine relatively new - less than 2,000 mi
As long as PRNDL selector is in drive or reverse, the transmission appears to be always engaged, attempting to move the car. Idling must be at 2,000 rpm to stop with the transmission in gear. Obviously, atthat rpm, the car is shuddering, attempting to pull against the brakes.

Suggestions??

Could be the torque convertor, but what is a chelle?

I have only very limited experience with automatics, (4 times a rental car in Canada for a number of weeks), but I was just wondering what your problem actually is. Engaging should be at 2000 otherwise the car will stall. You have to keep the brakes on, but when pulling away, will the revs go down, wtihout stalling the engine? or is the problem really only when the car is not moving?
BTW is it a Chevelle SS?

Chevy didn't make chevelles in '63, 1964-1972.

If you can afford it, get a Turbo 400 or 350 for it. I find the Powerglide useless since it's only a 2 speed automatic and both the 400 and 350 are 4 speed autos, besides those trannies are strong as hell! Just my 2 cents.

definitly a problem with the torque converter.
