I've just read my Pickups book, and I was atsonished to see the power ratings for a lot of the engines. The book is about American trucks, and the highest output of power on any of the trucks in there was 230bhp.... from a 7.4 litre/454 cu. engine!!! What happened to the times of the 70's when a 7.4 litre V8 could churn out 400bhp? And how come the engines in Europe/Japan are so much more efficient, because BMW can squeeze 343bhp out of a 3.2 litre 6 cylinder, and Honda can pull 197bhp (more than 90% of the trucks in that book) out of a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder?

There are 454 truck engines and 454 car engines, the trucks not being high powered but they have loads of torque. The foreign engines are higher rpm's and have better designs than the hefty american v-8s.

True... but why can't they make diesels with twin turbos then? Something with less displacement, that will make better fuel figures...I understand why the trucks have a lot of torque, so that they can pull up tree stumps and haul from low revs at decent speed.

What do you mean? The Ford F150 SVT Lightning has 360 bhp with a 5.4 litre V8... and the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab has 500 bhp with a 8.3 litre V10 !?!

Old book...it only goes up to 1997, I love those 2 new pickups though... especially the Dodge! Have you seen the new concept F150 Lightning? It has a really cool turbo boost...

you don't mean a really cool supercharger boost.....?

most older trucks only come with that much cause they're made for torque......check the 91-93 chevy 454 SS(silverado SS), its got like ~200hp but like 400tq. they can't be compared to car engines(except for the new 1's.....lighting or srt-10).

diesel trucks have 1 big turbo, tho you can put twin turbo's if you'd like.(saw a totally custom diesel truck making 5.7 secs down the 8th mile, it had TT's on that diesel engine)

Is it supercharger boost? Do superchargers have intercoolers as well? I understand now that truck engines are tuned for torque tho, chek out post no. 3 for proof.

Dont forget the 190bhp of the 1.8 K-series of the Exige :D

Definatley dont forget the 900bhp+ from the 2.4L in the Ford RS200! (Anyone read the latest Evo mag? :p)

actually the lightning has 380 horsepower, in 1999 it did have 360, the dodge truck is a huuuuuge ass viper engine theres alot of these in texas

My dads 2004 Ford F-150 SuperCrew has a 5.4L V8 rated at 300 hp and 365ft/lbs of torque, so a 7.4L putting out only 230 hp is pretty weird :confused:

as far as i remember the new lighting has a supercharger, not a turbocharger, and superchargers do create boost.
they have either heat exchangers(for roots/twin-screw styles) or aftercoolers(for centrifugals), there's some ppl have put actual intercoolers(front mounted) on centrifugal superchargers(custom stuff......)

something else.....emissions:), thats why most trucks down in the 90's(and cars, like the camaro) didn't have so much hp.
they still do have so much torque:).

Yes, 99 and up Lightnings have Supercharges and it also has an intercooler. The Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCrew also has an intercooled and is supercharged.

it sounds to me like your just talking about water to air and air to air intercoolers....cenrifugal superchargers arent as reliable and easy to fix as roots and screw type superchargers so theyre not used by manufacturers, but plenty of tuners have water to air intercoolers in their kts.

The 454/7.4 V8 that put out 230bhp was done in 1992-4, and it was apparently tuned as high as it would go...lol! I suppose more modern vehicles were engineered to have the mouth to match their trousers, like the 5.4lr 300bhp/360lbsft V8 on the Ford, and the new 8.3 lr V10 in the Ram SRT/10. I do suppose we have to take in the actual emissions equipment used as well, like someone said (can't remember their name). Does someone have the performance figures for a Chevy Silverado 454SS? I would like to know how it shapes up with today's performers.
