View Full Version : Car platforms

I have seen this Pontiac Soltice. Which is built on kappa i think, Anyway something that has crossed my mind of late is what does a platform look like beofre the car is built on it ?
Cause the thing i'm intrested in is what it starts as and then what is built on it, Because after seeing the torana concept and Pontiac Soltice, they looked like they were from differnt worlds.

That's it, the Solstics platform; well actually, take away the wheels, engine, and interior materials, then you have the platform.

The Solstic, like a lot of today’s cars, uses a unitized construction (also said as: unibody, or unitbody). Basically, the metal body, floor pan, and chassis form a single structure. It's usually lighter and more rigid (important for the Solstic) over the basic body-on-frame assembly; where the metal body structure is attached to a separate chassis frame. Trucks and SUVs are known for there body-on-frame construction, not to rigid really

Now is that the kappa platform ??

fpv_gtho
10-10-2004, 02:02 AM
For platforms just think of the floorplan....2 cars sharing a platform, if engineered right, can look completely different but share the same wheelbases, tracks, room for engine, drive layout etc. just the bare basic things i guess that determine its overall image

SlickHolden
10-10-2004, 02:40 AM
So if that is the kappa How did holden get the torana to look like that ? it looks longer and heaps bigger, Is it a Modafied version like the Holden Platform is ?
Don't ask me why all of a sudden but i'm really intrested in this stuff cause i really have not seen or payed very much attension in the past till now:)

fpv_gtho
10-10-2004, 02:46 AM
Have a look at the Chevy Nomad concept and you'll see another car based on Kappa.....Compare it to the Solstice and look at the similarities, but also see its flexibility

SlickHolden
10-10-2004, 02:54 AM
Looks like a panel van with a chopped roof, So you can really build anything of a platform you just stretch it:) http://www.detnews.com/pix/2004/01/07/0biz/b007-nomad-0104y-4.jpg

fpv_gtho
10-10-2004, 02:58 AM
There wasnt any stretching, but from the same base theyve made a wagon and a convertible

OMIGAWSH!!! i want a new Torana! 280kw of twin turboed V6!!! RWD and i feel like a little kid when he sees a cool ride. I just wont stop talking about one till i get one!

Blue Supra
10-11-2004, 02:19 AM
Def NOT a fan of the pink and white colours but give it a bright red exterior and a matching leather interior id sooo be into that!

SlickHolden
10-11-2004, 03:02 AM
That intiria is so future look, Maybe that's why the white??
Maybe what every color you have the inside will be with the white:)

fpv_gtho
10-11-2004, 03:14 AM
I personally dont mind the colour scheme, hey it grabs your attention at least...

Holden wont produce it with those figures though, It'll kill the GTS by day 1

SlickHolden
10-11-2004, 05:03 AM
Yes very true, And i really can't see some of that intiria execpt that centre of the dash, That is VE maybe ?

fpv_gtho
10-11-2004, 05:55 AM
could be, but i wouldnt expect much this early, for such a significant model. maybe they'll produce something for Melbourne that'll be completely different interior wise, yet still similar so people think of VE, then another Syndey 2005 as well

SlickHolden
10-11-2004, 08:46 AM
I think they try to confuse us with stuff, And most of the time the truth was right in front of us in plain view lol :D

now that post could also confuse lol :p

Blue Supra
10-11-2004, 05:08 PM

You're right about it killing the GTS, but damn it would start a whole new sub-culture like the XR6T did... and id soo be in it!:)

SlickHolden
10-11-2004, 11:31 PM
But if the GTS got 7lt then the Torana wouldn't kill it, Unless HSV made one, And i guess they wouldn't mind getting there hands on one:D
Also if Holden do build it, There will be differn't models a FWD plus RWD Turbo and Nonturbo, But if they could AWD it there could be a Competitor for WRX :)
But in it's current form it could kill the SS if lower in price

Colty
10-12-2004, 02:20 AM
Id imagine it would also be very light like the like old toranas giving it a big advantage

fpv_gtho
10-12-2004, 02:31 AM
They wont put Torana and FWD together noway, but it could start something up again. im wondering if Holden and Ford for that matter, are willing to consider medium sized local cars with the potential to rob the large cars of their performance buyers. I suppose though if you take the Commodore's average of 6000 sales a month and consider if it dropped to 5000, but with 2000 Torana's, Holden still comes out ahead.

SlickHolden
10-12-2004, 02:58 AM
Ahhh good point, They might lose in one area but gain 1000 extra overall :D
Maybe the TTV6 isn't a good idea just yet but the torana is.
They could make a coupe out of it, a 4door and The hatch.
Wonder if they will look at a smaller capacity engine for base models ?
But if ford and Holden built smaller cars they could steal some sales from toyota mitsubishi, I think anyone that owns a Current Vectra would have a torana in a heart beat :)

Your getting close to the magic 7 mark :D:D

fpv_gtho
10-12-2004, 03:04 AM
Anyway they look at it, Holdens stuck with their mantra.....they wont be able to get away with a large RWD coupe, medium RWD coupe/hatch/sedan or small RWD coupe/hatch/sedan without it being labelled a 21st century Monaro, Torana or Gemini.....Theyve got the possibility i think for a 2.8L Alloytec which could work as a good base engine against the Commy's 3.6, but it'd be getting tedious i think

SlickHolden
10-12-2004, 03:21 AM
You might get the torana fathfull screaming about a 2.8L lol:D I can just hear them now,,, Thats to bloody small ra ra ra ra bla bla bla... But really it isn't at all. Could be good for a ladys :D Adn the pink also  yuk :D

Luciferous
10-12-2004, 03:24 AM
I think all Holden needs to do to avoid killing the GTS is just bring back the SLR nameplate, that way both models can have massive performance and be different enough to not take sales away from each other

:) good point gfpv, it's easy to forget how big Oz is - kind of puts Belgium into persepective :)

But, all those people !! 10M Belgians , only half the size of Aus :)

fpv_gtho
10-14-2004, 03:52 AM
its a bit ironic....its all sand on the inside and no one wants to be stuck there, but on the edges its sand as well, but everyones more than happy to be there

10-14-2004, 04:02 AM
well at least things grow on the edge sand :P

fpv_gtho
10-14-2004, 04:09 AM
you'd probably be surprised how much the sand goes into the coastline.....i was driving up to Port Stephens not that long ago, and maybe only 10km from the coast, you could see all the sand in the ground, especially the hills....

Colty
10-14-2004, 04:14 AM
10km :O !! what does that signify, a long time a mega tsunami came along and put all the sand there ><

fpv_gtho
10-14-2004, 04:17 AM
lol maybe, i doubt it though.......All up there its like swampland and stuff though so maybe its just a place that just recently came out of the water

Colty
10-14-2004, 04:23 AM
Well thousand or millions of years ago sydney to Newcastle was just ONE BIG swamp, thats why theres so much coal around the area.

fpv_gtho
10-14-2004, 04:25 AM
well i think anythings possible......the reason why theres the great dividing range is cause the tectonic plate that NOW is cutting NZ in half, used to be halfway between NSW, VIC and QLD

Colty
10-14-2004, 04:29 AM
fek it has a name too, the great dividing range has some sort of special fault name, where the area below it is flat (sydney) and its a rapid increase in height(medlow bath - katoomba) then its practically a very very slow descend(lithgow - bathurst - so forth)

fpv_gtho
10-14-2004, 04:33 AM
Yeah, i went right over them to Bathurst once, and all the altitudes they put on all the towns going up there was quickly going up to 1000m, then started going down to about 800 slowly, then suddenly jumped down to 600 at Oberon and Bathurst

I can't get underground cable to my unit telstra won't do it, And my phone line is pairegain so there goes ASDL also.
I'm on this shitty thing called primus one... As much as i hate them it's a great deal for me, pay $55 That includes line rental plus dial up internet, And free local phone calls up to 1,000 per month. To get cable underground i would need permission from the body corp, + they would need to foot the bill, Which would be more then $2,000. They won't pay and i havent won keno yet lol. :D
ADSL my phone line is Pairgain so it will not support ADSL, If they come and replace the phone line it will cost me $250 Sounds good, But here is the catch, The hole area is pairgain it's telstra's cheap way of laying line down, Save's them $$$$. Now they can't do it anymore but 7 years to late for me.
So i can pay the $250 for a new line but because the hole area is pairgain they will need to fix everyone's they wont bother it's a bill of 10's of millions to replace all that, So my area is only 7 years old but shit old underground with low tech phone lines :(

ok, i heard that its around cable speed atm, except for the outer edges of where you can get it. if your right in the middle i expect speeds would be pretty good. the best part about it is, you can take your laptop anywhere you like and still be connected to the internet.

The newer metropolitan wireless technologies are good for 2Mb deployed NOW and have the advantage of being symmetrical so te same up and down speeds.
You can sometimes push to get community hubs set up. All it takes is a network location within a 2-5 mile radius - so still probably not what Australia needs :)

You could sling 802.11g over a couple of miles with a directional aerial ( home made out of pringles tubes - SERIOUSLY :) )

About $70 for gateway oin his network and card in your PC :)

Blue Supra

wireless is insecure but, anyone with a wireless card and a laptop and can hax your network if its not secured right. At some of the schools ive worked in theyve had wireless set up, as a test of security i brought in my laptop with wireless card, haxed their network inside 10 mins and was sucking up their 2mb pipeline....
if you get wireless make sure its DAMN tight security wise or youll have leeches comin out the wazoo!

I'd talk to your mate (quietly).
Share some of his monthly costs for connection and link your PC to his with 802.11g. As BS says, jsut set it up to it's highest security and you're OK and DONT do network shares on anythingf personal between you !!
Oh and don't tell his ISP what you're doing and remove it if they come around. ISPs dont' let you do that normally and will ask you to remove it if caught.

My mate drives trucks, He was on about $37,000 per year, He left that job and now in his new job of about 16months He gets $49,000. And you won't belive this he looks no better off now, About 10 years ago when i was on the doll, Life seemed much more easy then now, Back then i got a playstation, Bed, Stereo, Car, We had what we wanted, Now i have twice as much money and can't do anything like that, The only thing i have spent a bit of money on over the last 3 years is this PC. I feel we struggle to pay the bills and have something we need or want, Our shopping bill is $150 every 2 weeks that's the limit, If we wan't to pay the bills have our personal things like for me the internet, And soon pay TV, If we want these things something has got to suffer along the way,
It's like you got to suffer now to get what you wan't to make your life more fun more happy. And it's as has been said already, If the Goverment is claiming such a strong and great budget, How come it doesn't help lower paid people
When i was 18-19 i was always thinking ahead, What was i going to do with my life, Now i can't see much ahead other then the same old stuff, The only light in the distance could be my mums insurence claim comming through,
And if it does its up to me she said to make things happen, I'm the one everyone comes to to hide money or do low budget shopping or save money, Some call me tight:D But i know limits and never cross them, My mum hates shopping with me she love to pick everything up, And i like to toss it out:D

I read this on ninemsn.

Some media outlets seem a little confused about the origins of Torana's underbody, claiming it is the same as that beneath the left-hand drive Pontiac Solstice convertible. One or two outlets have even suggested it's a variation on the Zeta architecture set to underpin the next Commodore.

One look at wheelbase and track dimensions cast serious doubts on both scenarios. Torana's wheelbase of 2.84m is a massive 43cm longer than Solstice, while its front and rear track measurements of 1542mm are 11cm and 13cm shy of the Zeta-based Buick Velite.

Make no mistake, the Torana rides on a new architecture, which is set to go before GM's portfolio planning board to get the approval it needs to become a production platform. Then, and only then, will Holden and any other GM brand have the green light to develop vehicles like the Torana.
