It's between the Alfa and the Volvo, (not interested in German prestige cars). Emotionally the Alfa, rationally the Volvo, so it is the Alfa (getting older these days :) )

We don't get any of these diesels in the States. Again, Mercedes because of 70+ years of diesel know-how.

...and uncomfortable. (and pretty ugly too :p )

I would go with the 270CDI, best engine in Mercedes's modular engine range. Altough the 220 variant is close.
For those who don't know, the 200,220,270 and 320 CDI engines are essentially the same they are built with the same components. The difference is that the 200/220 use 4cyl and the 270 and 320 add 1 and 2 cylinders, respectively. Ingenious and cost saving. The difference between the 200 and 220 is just a combination of different engine management, non variable turbo and intercooler IIRC.

oh and it's D5 not DS for the Volvo :). A DS is something else ;)

...and uncomfortable.

Audi are reputed to provide the best seats available.

I'm sure that What Car? did an ergonomic test to find which seats were the most supportive, least likely to cause discomfort etc.

I've not been in any modern Audis for any great length of time, but if they are anything like VW's they should be fine.

Seats are good yes, but the suspension on every audi is just plain horrible.

Every current model, yes.
