Lucky you with a VR6. www.vwvortex.com has one of, if not the largest, forums for VWs. If you're looking for more power, start with the basics- exhaust, chip, cams, a real cold air intake. If you want better handling, depending on your budget, you can get a 60/40 (mm) drop for about $400, all the way up to $1500 for fully adjustable coilovers. There's a lot of styling choices for the Mk3s.

http://www.rpiequipped.com/2/ RPI is having sales until the end of October. 20% off everything.
http://www.tuningzubehor.com/ Great guys, fast shipping.
http://www.parts4vw.com/ Considered by some to have the best customer service.
http://techtonicstuning.com/ These guys sell good affordable chips, as well as exhaust and cams.

How many miles are on your VR? If there's over 100,000 if the timing chains haven't been done, I'd STRONGLY suggest having them done.

i just picked up a 97 vr6. first thing you need to focus on is handling, then go for power upgrades. vr6 love to breath, and will thank you for letting them do so. mod the airbox or install a cold air intake, bolt up an exaust system and that thing will rock. definatly focus on handling first.
