you didnt say it had to be a production car(altho you could say what im talking about is in "production") ill have to say one of the 2 or 4-5 seater long travel sandrails fitted with either a turbocharged subaru flat 4 or porsche flat 6 pumping out anywhere from 300-500hp in a sub 1000lbs sandcar or one fitted with a 300hp+ northstar V8 or chevy small block at around 400hp n/a. or if you want to get extreme they sell ones with twin turbo or supercharged chevy ls1/6, lt1's, or built northstars pumping out anywhere from 900-2000hp again in very light sand cars, the suspention is so god you could hit a foot tall rock going 40 and barly feel it, even the flat 4 pwered ones have enough poer to burry the ass end in the sand if you put your foot down the HIGH hp onse can and will flip if you give them anything close to WOT going up a hill or under 50mph and even then they can still pop weelys(keep in mind these are mid or rear engine cars with probly a 20/80 to 40/60 weight split) hey are so fast on sand any truck would sink in its not even funny, any americans here go to glamis california during a big weekend like thanksgiving, labor day, or the 4th of july and youll see what im talking about

When you mentioned "Off Road" I wasn't thinking of fast rallys so much as I was thinking about true off road vehicles such as the Jeep Wranglers. I've owned both a Wrangler and currently have a 1998 V8, Jeep Gand Cherokee (Limited). As the sloggan goes.."There's only one".
Man they are so much fun.

This is my deffinition of "Off Road" (it looks like it wont make it over that rock but Believe me, It Will!)

Dont know what a Rubicon is but a Defender is fairly well regarded as tough, capable and durable. I have an 80 series Landcruiser with a 4" lift kit and it is pretty unstoppable. My mates have 80s and 100 series with and without suspension mods and we can get through quite a lot. Nissan Patrols are also highly regarded. They are tough and reliable. Of course off road driving requires common sense and a different attitude to driving on road. Nothing is invincible. The cars to avoid for serious offroad work would be the M class Mercs, Cayennes, X5 BMWs, Volvos, Audis and all the soft roader types. Great for posing around town but severely restricted when it comes to durability, ground clearance and the "what the ****" attitude to scratches and dust. Take a look in the outback of Australia and see what people drive. Toyotas, Nissans and Landrovers.

i like the look of the Defender 110 and 130 and think that theyd put up a good fight going offroad, then Land Rover released the Defender 90 here and it just gets better

The Landrover Defender is the best 4x4 car.

rubicon or a h1 is prob the best you can get straight from the dealer in america.
in iceland they take old ass willys, stuff them with powerful engines and tweak everything else to make some of the most balls-to-the-wall 4x4s on the planet.

this is what they do:

i personaly think that the Mitsubishi pajero is the best. IT has won the dakar rally how many times and thats is a reall off road rally not just dirt tracks. You make your own track from one side of the dakar to the other (i think).

the pajero's pretty good, but in the real tough stuff that people go through over here, cars like the defender, patrol and landcruiser that still have front and rear beam axles with enough diesel power are considered the best. the dakar rally looks like more of a test of endurance more than a test of off-road ability, and the front and rear independant suspension on the pajero probably come into play there

Land Rover Series IIA - 1965 is the Best!
Other interesting ones are: Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender 90!
