The new Audi: Audi Avantissimo
September 12, 2001
Audi Avantissimo – a New Form of Dynamism and Luxury
Text and pictures courtesy of Audi AG
At the 2001 International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany (the ‘IAA’), Audi is exhibiting the Avantissimo concept study. This is a vision from the company that makes the cars bearing the four-ring badge – a high-performance Avant for the luxury car class, and at the same time a means of demonstrating the many innovative technologies that Audi’s engineers have developed for future automobile generations.
The idea
Beautiful estate cars are called ‘Avant’: this well-known slogan symbolises the estate car that, in the past ten years, has shown how to rise above the demands of pure practicability and offer more. ‘Avant’ has become a synonym for progressive design, sporting character and advanced styling in this motoring category.
This in turn has led to a fundamental change in the way that such models are viewed by the market, a process that Audi began and which it has shaped ever since the outset. A glance at our roads, with so many Avants to be seen in the B and C model segments – to say nothing of their many imitators – is convincing proof of the way that a sound idea has established itself successfully.
All of this makes the new concept study much more than a mere formal experiment. It is a step forward into the D segment of the market, the ‘upper house’ of automobile design, and a logical culmination of the Avant concept. Its luxury and interior space, its forward-looking design and its concentrated high-tech specification represent a unique combination, particularly when allied to dynamic performance that itself sets a new standard even in the luxury class.
The Avantissimo is a design study with which Audi has re-interpreted the potential inherent in the Avant concept in a form suitable for the luxury car category. It is a supreme display of top performance, a new formal idiom and the technologies of tomorrow – a decisive step forward into Audi’s

Pegaso was the only Spanish car to recieve international supercar status in the fifties. At the time, the company was government-backed and had experience building large 9 litre coaches. The Z102 made its first appearance at the 1951 Paris Auto Show. After that various models gained international reputation for advanced designs. In all, around 125 Tipo Z102's were made only two of which received bodywork from Saoutchik.

This is the car the world was waiting for - the 5.0 liter 32-valve 928 Series 4. Boasting 316HP, redesigned front and rear fascia’s (it takes a very sharp eye to see the rear section was elongated slightly to improve airflow) , as well as updated interior trim, the 928 S4 was the fastest 928 yet. Numerous other aerodynamic subtilizes were employed to lower the body's coefficient of drag - the front spoiler was redesigned to allow air to pass smoothly under the car with the aid of a new aero belly pan; a set of grill flaps opened and closed depending upon speed and drive line temp. Radiator cooling was serviced by a dual, infinitely adjustable electric fan set. Porsche created controversy again with the S4's foldable matte-black rear wing spoiler. On later cars the spoiler was fixed in place. Astute observers will note the S4 features wider rear rims than before measuring 16 x 8.
The S4 drive line was upgraded with a larger-diameter single disc clutch replacing the sometimes-problematic twin-disc unit of the 928 and 928 S. The 928 S4 also featured upgraded brakes using four-piston Brembo calipers, even larger rotors and pads, as well as ABS. One ride in an S4 and you'll see the need for such massive stoppers!
As testament to the S4's super car status, Al Holbert set two FIA world land speed records of 171+mph in a stock, catalytic converter equipped 928 at Bonneville - the same car which could be bought at any Porsche authorized dealer!
The S4 is an excellent starting point for the serious 928 enthusiast - 32v big HP engine, matching S4 'big-brakes', ABS, etc. The original list price of over $60k+ this car is a great value in today’s marketplace.
With the introduction of the 360 Spider, Ferrari's range of models on sale around the world becomes a total of four. The new soft-top will go on sale during the summer alongside the 360 Modena that was launched this time last year also at Geneva.
The two 8-cylinder cars join the two 12-cylinder models - the 550 Maranello that marked Ferrari's return to the front-engine, rear-wheel drive set-up for its high performance GTs, and the 456M GT and GTA (the latter the automatic version) which caters for the traditionally popular demand for 2+2s.
The 360 Spider marks new heights of technical excellence for Ferrari's convertible models, and sets standards that have never been achieved by similar models from any other manufacturer.
The all-aluminium chassis features for the 360 Spider’s structural sections are in extruded aluminium with cast nodes which are made in the same foundry as the alloy components for Ferrari's F1 cars. The chassis boasts the highest torsional and flexional rigidity figures in the world - 850 DAN in/deg. and 420 DAN/mm respectively.
This gives the 360 Spider exactly the same performance (road holding, driveability, acceleration and top speed) as the 360 Modena berlinetta. This is in part due to the car's highly efficient aerodynamics, with its completely flat underbody and two rear Venturis. The Spider is very efficient with its Cd only marginally higher at 0.36 compared to the Coupé's 0.33.
Class-leading performance capabilities are equalled by the Spider's comfort levels and ease of use, especially with the F1 transmission version where the gearbox's steering wheel-mounted paddle change makes even driving in traffic at slow speed a most pleasant task.
The 360 Spider's hood is available in four colours and its seven hydraulic actuators fold it automatically beneath the rear cover. This flush-fitting system ensures optimum aerodynamics even when driving with the top down. The hood takes exactly the same time - 28 seconds - to open and close. The rear roll bars feature a mesh screen which prevents wind buffeting. Passive safety is further heightened by a reinforced windscreen surround which can take the full weight of the car in the event of a roll.
The 360 Spider's running gear is identical to that of the berlinetta and the competition version used in the Ferrari Challenge; with V8 engine of 3569, it produces 400 bhp at 8500 rpm and maximum torque of 38 kgm at 4750 rpm.

ummm the 360 spider is not a new ferrari. it's been around for over 6 years.
After 35 years, a new breed of Porsche 911 have taken over. The old look was replaced by a new, more aerodynamic body and more technological advances were incorporated in this car than in any other 911, ever. Yet even, with the flashy makeover, the new 911 will never be mistaken for anything else. The new 911 offers a new water-cooled flat-six that offers more efficiency, while still boasting the most power ever available in a Carrera. The interior is much bigger, thanks to its new frame, yet the ride is as crisp and agile as any Porsche ever built. This new breed of 911's still has the old ones bark.

i know but i think it is beautifull
Once upon a time, well actually not that many years ago my partner Ian Fraser and I published a rather upmarket magazine- Supercar Classics. There was no place in this magazine for anything that wasn't very special and new cars rarely made an appearance. Ferrari GTOs, Lambo Miuras, Lancia Delta Integrales, it was that kind of a magazine. Alas, Ian and I are no longer partners-FF Publishing is just something rather nice and nostalgic to look back upon-but one thing is certain- the BMW M Coupe would have walked straight into the pages of the magazine as a great automobile. Not maybe, not one day, no. On day one. It is that kind of a very special car-designed by true enthusiasts for true enthusiasts.
It was also the only car- apart from the new VW Beetle that stopped the traffic and made shopping trips in Northern California rather longer than expected- everybody wanted to look at it, sit in it, talk about it. Yes, there were people who did not like the styling but they were in a minority. They also did not understand that for the sort of handling the boys in Munich had in mind huge overhangs were out of the question. They designed the nearest thing to a go-kart that would take two people and their golf clubs (!) from one end of Europe or California for that matter to the other indecently quickly and in total comfort. There are no compromises, no mini-seats for one year olds. No, this car is for two people who appreciate the journey in an outstanding automobile rather then travel from A to B. There is, believe me, a huge difference.

castagna gc
The code name “Ginevra” is over. The car has now a real name: G.C. from the owner’s initials. As the in ’30 they will be engraved on the car doors, just after the Geneva exhibition.
The car is a sporting two doors coupé on a rear whele drive Alfa Romeo chassis. Following the Carrozzeria Castagna tradition, the lines are sharp and they underline the volumes treatment. The bonnet newly submit to the public the prow frontal: a tipical Castagna emblem of the ’30. Among the line cuts of the body, the new LED main-beams allow the coachbuilder to get new lines. Nowadays Castagnas offer to the owner a direct relationship with his car. Through a wrist whatch, the car recognises the owner and opens its door. The leather trim colour related is in the coordinate “nouance” with the exterior. This car too will attend the 2003 Villa d’este Concours d’Elegance

PEUGEOT 907
This is the archetypal touring car, discreet, but processing a sculpted and elegant shape, luxurious on account of the choice of materials it incorporates, and also extremely sporty as a result of its styling and its unrivalled engineering credentials. The 907 is a two-seater coupé, modern but also classic. As in the time of the great coachbuilders, this coupé embodies one of the finest engineering dreams of combining a large capacity engine within a classical shape, achieving a genuine synergy of advanced technology and motoring tradition.
The 6.0 litre V12 engine (368 kW or 500 bhp) is positioned longitudinally behind the front axle; connected by a small propshaft, it transmits its power to a six-speed gearbox placed longitudinally in front of the rear axle.
The wheelbase of this GT coupé is 2.50 m, its length 4.37 m, its width 1.88 m, while its height culminates at 1.21 m and its passenger compartment, designed to accommodate two people comfortably, is situated just ahead of the rear axle to allow for a long bonnet. The kerb weight is around 1 400 kg.
The structure consists principally of a carbon fibre shell, to which the mechanical components, for example, the four double wishbone suspension units, are attached. Set into the bonnet, a glazed panel reveals twelve intake trumpets reminiscent of a fairground organ.
Brown leather and light grey alcantara trim is used to cover both the interior and the seats. The steering wheel rim and the gear lever knob have authentic wood inlays.

Acura NSX
The Acura NSX is more than superb engineering. It gives you a higher sense of belonging. An enlightened sense of being. A G-force experience so powerful, it transports you to another space and time. As you rev the engine toward 7100 rpm in your highly nimble existence, you know that in the 2005 NSX, you're in for an extraordinary journey. Wherever that may be.
audi nuvolari quattro
Audi will be showing its new Nuvolari quattro concept study, a vision of tomorrow’s elegant, powerful Gran Turismo, at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It combines future Audi design philosophy and the progressive technology and dynamic road potential of a high-powered GT.
With the Nuvolari quattro, Audi’s designers have created a two-door 2 + 2-seater coupé with classic GT proportions. Its lines are an evolutionary interpretation of the current repertoire of outlines typical of Audi’s styling philosophy.
After the debut of the Pikes Peak quattro crossover study at the Detroit Motor Show, the Nuvolari is the second car in 2003 with which Audi shows off the future of the brand: a future notable for systematic emphasis on sporting character, highly advanced technology, unique design and emphasis on exclusiveness.

From Acura Press Release) The intention in creating the Acura NSX, first introduced for the 1991 model year, was to produce a hand-built, exotic, mid-engine sports car that would establish entirely new levels of prestige, performance, refinement, drivability and reliability. The aluminum-bodied NSX defined a new interpretation of the exotic sports car through state-of-the-art, lightweight technology.
