The fastest piston powered, wheel driven "car" is Goldenrod, with 4 Hemis powering it to 409.277mph in 1965

The story behind the MB record was that the speed they reached was 269mph, however when it reached that speed, a strong gust flipped the car through the air and it was destroyed, and the driver was killed. There was another MB record made, and it still lives today. The top speed of the car is over 269mph, but it has never been reached; and never will be reached with this car.

I think the top speed was an 'estimate'.
It did go on to break lots of high-speed endurance records and has a slot in the Motorsport Hall of Fame in Michigan. But I dont' remember it getting top speed.

Not really fair, Mustang.
Thrust is turbine and doesn't drive the wheels.
It gets a different class for speed.

With twin hemi racing engines that put out 4,000 horsepower. The Burkland Streamliner as reported on http://www.missoulian.com/NIE/topics/041105-fast.html

A quote from the site listed above:

The car blasts across the desert floor and flashes through a measured mile course in 8.2 seconds.

The remarkably short scene recorded by Svoboda documented a new world land speed record for piston-powered, wheel-driven vehicles. The feat was accomplished on Oct. 16 by an all-Montana team.

The speed: an incredible 417.020 miles per hour for a two-way average in the “flying mile,” in which the car – called a streamliner in the sport....

do you have any pics of it? and maybe a few details like its peak power?

"The Summers Brothers' gorgeous Goldenrod produced 608 bhp from each of its four supercharged Chrysler Hemis. It was 32 ft long, 48 in wide, and most of it was 28 in high. The wheelbase was 207 in, and the whole car weighed 8450 lb. Uses four-wheel drive."

It hit 425 in practice and was never driven in top gear, so could have gone faster.
