I have the opportunity to pick one of these up at a scarily good price. Is there anything I should be wary of, other than the requirement to plan fuel stops every 15mins, before I add it to my garage? This would include style advice, if it is considered to by highly uncool to be driving a RR at 27…..

have it checked by a specialist. Unexpected repairs will cause scarily high prices :)

Whether you want to be seen in it is your problem, do you have a bowler hat?

Aslong as you're not a wannabe Gangster, you should be fine. Make sure its reasonably low k's and get a full check up on it before you even think about buying it.

Beware of the hydraulics of these cars (brakes/suspension)
Some cars have citroen based suspension
Cost for repairs /overhaulcan be enormous !
Engine is reliable but overall parts prices are high.
Lots of parts can be found on other cars though wich helps....

which would actually make them very reliable :)

But the spheres are quite expensive to replace and they have to replaced every 60.000 km (?).

160000 and the Rolls had them only for the rear suspension I think. The current price is about 50 euro for one sphere.

Only 50 euro's ? Wow, that's not what I had in mind, I had something like 1500 euro's in mind for a suspenion overhaul. I seemed to remember my dad paying that much for suspension work on his XM V6 but that included probably lot's of other stuff. Virtually nothing really worked as it should on that car, it was a first generation XM. I loved that car though, I remember that it was really big car as well and it had all this cool stuff like buttons on the steeringwheel and an on board computer (quite special back then). I was about 6 years old back then so everything looked kinda big :)

I do think it would be a strange car to have as your primary mode of transportation. But, that's up to you. I personally wouldn't drive it as my primary - at any age. But, especially at my age (26, not quite 27), I wouldn't want to drive it everday. As a secondary fun car, I think it would be fine and you would certainly be unique. :)

Well Henk , I think you're a bit optimistic here
I have not worked yet on a Silver shadow but I personnaly know of a guy who had to spend about 9000 Euro for a hydraulics overhaul (brakes and suspension)
I agree that it is a bit steep and could probably be done cheaper but I am convinced that it will never be really cheap
It also depends wheter you know your way around auto parts or if you will if you recognize parts that are also on other cars

I have made a habbit of looking for the interchangeble parts on Italian and britisch cars as it makes life a lot cheaper when owning a Ferrari, Lambo or ISO !

I would love to drive one as my daily driver. '72 RR's are not hugely valued, so your insurance probably won't be prohibitive. However be careful for theft...with the RR badge on there, everybody's gonna want a pice of it.

At 160000 km I had my most extensive service bill, of about 1500 Euro's (I cant' check the exact amount before December 10th). That included IIRC the change of the timing belt, two new brake rotors and two new spheres, plus ordinary 20000 km service and maintenance which normally is already around 400 euro.
I admit that working on a Rolls could be tat dearer, but calling the spheres for a Citroen expensive went a bit too far in my opinion .

The car only has 28k miles on it, so it should be run in soon :)

It will not be used everyday, but pulled out of the garage for fun, and I'm not exactly gangsta material. I'm having a look at it tomorrow - should be fun to take for a spin, at the very least.

Is it the four or two door example ?

Car is a four door, but the 28k miles on the clock are a bit misleading, I'd say it has gone round twice.

On top of the AUD$9k purchase price I probably would have to spend that again to get it into reasonable condition. It has all the usual oil leaks (expected) but much of the interior is falling off and the rear suspension appears to not pump up evenly.

At this point I do not feel like a restoration project, so I will be passing on it.

Too bad, the restoration is where your pride for a car comes from.
