Lexus IS-F
Lexus today unveiled the IS-F luxury sedan at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The all-new 2008 IS-F will target the BMW M3 and Audi RS4, delivering more than 400 horsepower and 350 ft.-lbs. of torque from a 5.0-liter V8 engine. It will eventually be offered as a two-door coupe, as well.
Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. The IS-F engine is mated to the world’s first eight-speed "direct sport-shift" transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears.
In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs smoothly, and the torque converter allows for quick 0-60 acceleration in less than 4.9 seconds. The transmission also features a manual mode operated via a pair of paddles. Downshifts are accompanied by automated throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed. Heavy-duty Brembo brakes with 14.2-inch discs and six-piston calipers ensure all the power is kept under control. The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard.

I struggle to think the point of it. I don't think it's got much to do against the german supersaloons...

German mini super-saloons > this. It's a nice car, but the front 3/4 look awkward, and aint got shiznit on the subtlety of the Germans. This isn't the way a car like this should look, it should be understated but still have the ability to kill a cocky 911 driver...

Actually, I think it's a step in the right direction. Maybe not the best of steps, but a first nonetheless.
How much power is this thing packing anyway?
-
5L v8, with more than 400hp
-
overdone IMO...although the interior is hot:D I'd take a C55 AMG any day though...
-
Yeah, overdone for me, i think a regular Is with bigger wheel arches should have been enough. That engine air exit behind the front wheels really spoils it for me, front bumper next... shame.
-
It needs a manual gearbox if it wants to run with M3s.
-
i think its awful.. the hood line in profile is just bad. the side vent is gimmicky and seemingly unnecessary, and also just silly looking. and then KOTR is right, needs a stick. not the crappy 8 speeds auto that has gotten such awful reviews.
-
Little overdone, but I'm sure one drive and all excesses will be forgiven.
Toyota, please offer a manual as an option and make this a true contender in the supersedan segment.
-
I will be very surprised if the new M3 comes with anything other than the 7sp SMG box
-
true i think with a propper gearbox, it will give the M3 a good run 4 the money...but think it looks better then tha e90...now lets se how the coupe will look...

Why that lousy blue? Here's a good color to start M3 hunting with....

It's rumoured to have 425bhp, but as jinst4 said, the official line is over 400bhp. In my opinion this car has nothing worthy or different or new to make it a winner. The Audi S4/RS4 have brilliant built quality, Quattro 4-wheel drive (classic Audi trademark), and that engine in the case of the RS4. The Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG has probably one of the most charismatic V8 in production now and they are the original super saloon makers. And the BMW M3 has racing pedigree a lot of (clever?) technology.
Plus, as has been said, it's overdone and it only comes as an auto. I could be wrong, but this is my opinion.

It's a Lexus, so it'll be brilliantly built, and handle exceptionally well despite not having AWD, and Toyota V8s aren't exactly underachievers.
Though I can't argue with BMWs racing background, though how much of it affects the new M3 is something yet to be seen.

You're right, however in my opinion this still has no charisma... :(

They could certainly do a manual for it, although you're right, it probably will have an automatic. The way I see it, there are no other Japanese car manufacturers trying to step into the market at all. So you gotta give them some credit for trying at least. :p

Not probably, but rahter for sure, as the press release states so and the pictures of the interior show and automatic gearbox gear lever.

They could always add one later on, as with the M5. Popular demand can work wonders. ;)
In any case, one can always hope. :D
