Step 1: Find Miata.
Step 2: Find LS6 motor.
Step 3: ???

I love Miatas. I love SBC's. I think this would make for a great track car that you could drive every day, and still get respectable mileage and reliability out of. And on the odd chance it does break, it should be cheap and easy to fix. Quite possibly the perfect fun car.
Discuss. :)

possibly overpowered? i'd be fitting bigger tires and brakes ASAP :D
-
Wasn't this in a 'Real or Fake' competition asking whether it was a chop or not?
I hope it's not a chop. Fastest hairdressers around can drive those.
Except a helmet might spoil their hairdo.
-
It's very much real. There's a few of them running around. But this is the first I've seen with a LS6. So far I've only seen LS1 and 2 swaps.
I'm gonna have to build one of these before I die. Probably very shortly before I die, actually. :)
-
I'm gonna have to build one of these before I die.
well, that means you've only got two months to build it then. get cracking!

No, it's Step 3: Profit For your local tyre shop
-
I'd rather get a kit-car shell and dump an LS7 in there. Maybe a Cobra replica or something.
-
A company in Perth have been doing this sort of crap for a while now. Except for using a Miata/MX5 chassis and an LSX. Instead, they make their own tubular chassis and a supercharged Lexus 4L V8

Would that be the "Bullet" company? I saw some in-car from one of those from last years Targa Tasmania. The engine completely overwhelmed the chassis and tyres, the thing just had rampant power-oversteer on application of the throttle. To me, the idea of putting in a massively powerful, heavy V8 just seems to destroy the whole reason for having a MX5/Miata, it would just have to destroy the balance of the car.
-
It was actually. Havent heard too much about them recently, hopefully theyre still in business as their parent company is also the local distributor for Sprintex superchargers.

From what ive heard the balance is actually still VERY good. Got to remember that the LSx engines are one of the lighter V8s that can easily be pushed back and down.
I would even say that engine weight wouldnt be that much of a difference compared with the stock MX5 engine.

I went to uni with the guy's.. nephew I think. He designed their drag bike. There was something about them being bought by AEC, and it was them that did the supercharger conversions for Magnas and Rover 75s.
-
That'd be them. They also did the Falcon 300+ program
That'd be them. They also did the Falcon 300+ program
Was that the one from the '80s..?
I'm trying to remember it. All I remember is a B&W photo and some crazy bhp figure. Turbos.

STFU!
:D Honestly, I think this is a very stupid and thipicaly american idea. Whoever buys this thing, has no clue about what's the point of a Miata and what is it's background.
The only unoriginal engine that could make some sense in a Miata, would be something like an S2000. Compact, also light and very powerfull.
This said, this V6 sounds good, though I'm not sure what engine is that.

what about a rotary? light, compact, powerful, and staying within the same company :D
-
Rotary would be the route i'd take. Turbo Renesis/MX-5 anyone?
IWAARS6 - This was something they did only a few years ago. They basically replaced the 5L OHV V8 the Falcon had with a DOHC 4.6 out of a Mustang, and supercharged it for around 360kw and 600nm. They had plans for a 5.4 based on the current body BA/BF Falcon (02-present), as well as a coupe version of the AU Falcon (98-02) which Ford were looking at adopting (Holden was in the middle of putting the Monaro in production at the time) but the coupe idea fell through after Ford couldnt provide the development money, and i havent heard/seen anymore about their plans of doing a version based on the current Falcon with the 5.4. The guys doing it jokingly commented that after the AU was 300+, the BA would be more like 400+

BTW, I think thats an LS2...

I don't like rotarys or the way they deliver power. I don't like their maintenace issues either.

Typical European view, start bashing somthing you know nothing about...
Every come to think that maybe the owner got bored with the absolute lack of power the thing has? (Ive driven one, I can vouch, an absolute snore-fest).
According the guy who did the swap in the picture posted, the LSx/T56 combo is LIGHTER than the 1.8L I4 lump that came out of the car.

I highly doubt that. The original engine already has an aluminum head and it's considered a light engine even for a 4 cylinder.
The rest of your post, obviously, I won't comment.
-
Why just not get a Corvette? I mean you get a factory-warranty, already great dynamics and no home-made plumbing issues.
Am I missing something?

Do you have a link to it? The mid-80s one. Thanks!

I read really in-depth about a LSx swap into a Miata a while back, and if I remember right, the car gained 90 pounds total, but the weight was closer to the center of the car and lower in the chassis.
And even if it came out a little heavier, would it matter? The little handling you'd give up would be more than made up for in straight line speed.
Who doesn't want 400 horses under your right foot? :)
Who doesn't want 400 horses under your right foot? :)
Next step: send to Lingenfelter and have the car taken to 1,000+ horsepower.
Step after that: Take it to Boeing to have wings added

Honestly, you guys either don't like Miatas, or keep confusing car concepts.
I sure would hate to have 400bhp in such car. I'm not saying 115 make me totally satisfied. But the latest 1.8 158bhp is more than enough for a 1000kgs car. With a good LSD, it's enough to go around the world sideways.
There's no way the V8 "frankenstein" can deliver the same kind of feeling. It may be fast, but the delicacy of the driving experience is lost.
There's a popular missconception that hugely powerfull cars are the faster and most entertaining. If that was the reality, Lotus would have close their doors for good.

It seems you've never driven anything with any power...
The latest 158hp Miata struggles to pass minivans.
Having driven a Miata, I can tell you, a V8 is just what it needs. More power, little to no added weight, retained balance and a nice exhaust note? Why not?
-

Idiot. It's not a muscle car, it's designed for handling/ driving on twisty roads. It's not a Mustang.
Just wanted to clear it up, but I don't think it'll help, you're already set on the fact that the LS(insert number) = God and that every car should have one.
-
I don't think it's the best for the car.
However, if you want to, who cares? I wouldn't do something like that. But if you want to, so be it. To each his own.

Did you miss the part where the swap actually balances the car even more than stock, putting the weight closer to the center of the car and the ground? The only "downside" to the swap would be having to adapt to not being able to put all the power down as early coming out. But if you're already going through the corner faster, and you have 3x the power, is that really a factor anymore?
-
Man that just seems kind of ridiculous, you'd have to convert to RWD, get bigger brakes and tires, it seems to me that it'd overpowered and just overall kind of lame.

why put a vette logo on a Miata? And with that engine you'll need some tires, rims suspension, a new steering wheel and tach maybe, new exhaust...IMO there's no point. You shoulduv just got a NEW Miata, install factory performance parts, and add a Turbo.
