McLaren F1 GTR, Viper GTS-R and GTP Nissan ...

With events returning to back to normal, we have had the privilege to seeing cars in action that we had never seen before or not for a long time. Among them was this McLaren F1 GTR, which was demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Raced in the iconic Gulf colours, it had a hugely successful 1996 season with four wins. It was also the first GTR that was made road legal and it was driven to Le Mans in 1997 by Ray Bellm for him to compete in a Long Tail. Chassis 12R has been part of a prominent American collection for many years and made a rare appearance at Goodwood this year.
Also out at Goodwood and the Le Mans Classic a year later was this freshly restored Dodge Viper GTS-R. Extensively campaigned in period, it finished second overall in the 2001 Spa 24 Hours and then placed third in class at Le Mans the following year. Chassis C41 was raced through to 2006 and was only recently restored to its iconic 2002 Le Mans Playstation colours.
Although strictly speaking not a Group C car, this Nissan NPT-90 was driven up the hill at Goodwood as part of the popular category's 40th anniversary celebrations. Built on a spare chassis, it does not have period racing history but does boast the ultimate four-valve engine that made these cars quite literally destroy their tyres and get airborne during the period. Chassis 90-08 had also been demonstrated at Goodwood back in 2016.
