moonroof construction
Hi,
I've got a question about a moonroof's drainage construction.
In my Hyundai Elantra, it seems that the moonroof is designed to have leaks, but there are drain pipes that drains the water... is this design normal on other cars? I thought they'd make it watertight...
one major problem i have with this design is that, when i take the car to a high-powered touch-free car wash, the water pressure is too high such that it's forcing water into the moonroof drains... the drains can't take that much water and somehow the water is leaking from the READING LIGHT SWITCHES... anyone else had that problem before? i tried taking it back to dealer but they said it's no problem.. i just can't understand why would the drainage be connected with the electrical conduit....
Thanks

well my guess is that the over flow of water that can't get out the drain leaks into a support in the unibody structure of the roof. I would also guess that this particular support is connected to where your reading light switches are and that they are lower than the drain. So the overflow is just following gravity and ends up in your switches (which are not totally water tight).

The moonroof is water tight on my IS250... I don't see why they wouldn't make it water tight; it doesn't make much sense.

Have you talked to other Hyundai owners about the problem in their cars?

i had an '87 bmw 325 which had drains for the sunroof... the drain piping was clogged by some debris and the thing overflowed into the footwell of the rear passenger side. that was not a pretty smell, nor a lot of fun to clean the carpets.

Don't use a high-powered touch free car wash. Problem solved.

Or don't buy a hyundai...:D

that would solve a lot of problems :D

actually this is the only problem i've had with my hyundai so far... it's not that bad a problem.. just have to go to a less powered touch-free car wash.. :P
i only find one gas station that gives me this problem.. =/

Hyundais aren't that unreliable, they are just a little dull :p
The moon roof drain probably wasn't designed for that much water.

Most if not all cars have drain pipes, it's easier to have drains than make the sunroof watertight.
fa22-raptor, your roof most likely also has drains pipes, you just can't see them that easy.
