My Gordini rebuild
I have decided a while back that i an going to do a complete rebiuld on my Gordini. Although the engine, gearbox and brakes have been rebuilt about a year ago, the body was in urgent need of attention.
After a lenthy discussion with my garden keeper, we decided that today was the day. Started at 06h00 we begun to strip, grind ,cut and remove........
Here's some pix

What's your plan and methods for doing the body on the car? I do this stuff for a living and could give you some tips and help with it.

Gee thanx Johnny. What i plan to do is to remove all the rust and weld in plate and then resurface with bodyputty. I intend using the fibre type putty. Apparently it lasts longer.
If i get the body straight again, i will take it to a proffesional spraypainter to put the colour on. Want to keep it the same colour.
I've ripped all the carpets out. How on earth am i going to get rid of all the glue residue on the floorpan??

It looks like there are only superficial rust patches. No problems with the structural integrity? About glue removal, is sandblasting a too naive solution?
-
Henk, the rust on the car is only because of paint that cracked due to age. We are lucky here in SA not to have serious rust problems.
Sandblasting crossed my mind, but i think it is to brutal. I will then need to remove the dash and glass to prevent other damage.I hope the good old scraper will do the job

Be careful with what you are grinding with, like on the trunk. Heat from the grinding wheel can warp the metal, it will make the surface very uneven also. If you are planning on taking all the paint off, I'd recommend getting it media blasted.
There is fiberglass reinforced filler, but its not meant for a finish surface, and it has a lot of air pockets and pinholes.

You'll need to use a putty like USC's icing for a finish glaze.

You can sand that down with 80, then 180 or 220. The primer will fill in the sand scratches.
As for the glue residue, try a propane torch and a putty knife, or a wire brush wheel. But in all reality, the bottom of the carpet wont care.:p

It sure is, but you have to draw the line somewhere.;)

Got in there today with an angle grinder and a knotted cubbrush......too violent. There is to many body reinforsing that will be damaged. Will try the propane torch next
-
If you are stripping all the wiring, glass and the like out you can get the whole body dipped and that will remove all paint, rust, carpet glue and the like. With all the car industry in SA I can't imagine there isn't someone there that can do it.

^^^^^ or blasted ... just make sure they use the correct grade. Seen a shell almost disappear as they used industrial pipe grade abrasive :)
