No. The Mustang was close to being cut in the 80's, but a nice reinvention saved the name. Ground up redesign for 2005.

The Mustang was built on the Fox chassis from 1979 'til 2004. The latest version was called the SN95 chassis which was used from 1994 'til 2004.
The new 2005 Mustang is built on the S197 chassis which shares very little, only ~30%, of its components with Ford's global lineup.

That's right. Right now it's built on the Lincoln LS platform, shortened and lowered, to give the car a more tough look. Personally, I agree with everyone that the 2005 Mustang GT is a [SIZE="7"]HUGE[/SIZE] improvement over the previous ones, but I think it could have been designed better.
