The UCP Supercar :
After realizing my mistake, i'll post this now :o
What will the type of car we will be building be ?
The options:
- A Grand Tourismo (GT)
- 4-door sportscar
- thoroughbred racer
- track/road car
- real supercar (think Ferrari Enzo)
- single seater
See the attached poll.
-
haha- i voted thinking "im the only one for this option" but no way!a transaxle FR setup anyone?
-
IMHO a GT or 4 door sportscar is the most fun. It demands a bit more creativity than the others. A GT or 4 door needs not only the raw engine power but it also needs refinement, you'd have to be able to use this car on a day to day basis. I can't be tiresome to drive. It needs to be able to calm down if your cruising and it needs to be able to turn into a monster if you put the pedal to the metal.
It also has to be practical. Practicality and supercar don't go hand in hand most of the time. I think it would be a great challenge to come up with a supercar that gives us supercar sensations coupled to practicality and comfort. Think M5/RS6/CLS/CL but different.
If I may say one thing: try to make this car different, go full out with your ideas, share all your ideas with your team members even if they're ridiculous. You'll probably be laughed at for some ideas but some ideas will get accepted.
Try to make this car revolutionary and different. Especially different.

RS6=no suspension! i know many people love this car but i'd rather not fall for audis mistake of wrong engine position and hard suspension=sporty (thats an american viwpoint)
-
Yup, I know, Audi was a bad example when talking about comfort since they don't make a single car with a comfortable suspension ;). But that's a bit beside the point.
-
I voted GT but I don't care if it is a 2 door 2+2 or a full 4 door 4 seater as long as I am allowed to think up a big engine with lots of grunt!:D
Jediali and me gonna design one helluva engine!
-
I voted for the 4-door concept. I absolutely love cars like the RS4 and the M5. I think it is a great challenge to come up with a car that isn't only a good sportscar, but also a good every-day-driver.

I basically agree.
-
has anyone seen JC'c "family car 2000" show (as part of the car years series). In it he says its simple to make a sall car, luxury car, super car but to make a family car its almost impossible. I really think the chassis people will have the hardest job.
-
where's the "Sleeper Minivan" option?
-
now i think the gt should be built for small productions, but if you guys are gonna go all, car company style, then 4 door, both are fun, but id have to go with Grand Turismo
-
It seems that it's going to be a GT. Will this GT be a 2 seater or a 2+2 ?
I'd go for a 2+2 just to make a bit more "practical".
Maybe a car around the size of the Mercedes CL?
For the body design people: I think that an omission of the B-pillar would be cool?

CL-like big? That's too big if you ask me. I'd rather put it between Maserati Coupe/Jaguar XK size.
-
CL-like big? That's too big if you ask me. I'd rather put it between Maserati Coupe/Jaguar XK size.
I agree. I also think that a CL size car needs a highly valued brand behind it to make profit.
-
Maybe. It was just a suggestion :) . Doesn't really matter to me. I suggested the CL because it has decent rear seating space.
CL is 5,06m, XK is 4,8m and Maser is 4,5m
PS: twinspark, how are your drawing skills ? I've noticed that you're in the interior department as well ?
PS: twinspark, how are your drawing skills ? I've noticed that you're in the interior department as well ?
Yes I am, but mainly to focus on details and maybe run some Citroën-like ideas through. I've drawn a little, also in perspective, but never an interior. I believe I also lack artistic eye to be able to draw the big lines. How about you?

Heh, I'm not the world greatest drawer. I can draw things in 2D but adding depth and perspective makes my mind hurt. Either way, I've been trying and I came up with a basic dashboard sketch last night. I've attached it.
I've also got a lot of Citroënesque ideas myself. So we'll probably have a lot of ideas. Which is great.
I've attached my interior idea. I've wanted it to be a bit retro.
The aircon vents on the side will have to change, I've been thinking of the round style vents you find in the Alfa 33, 145, 146 etc or maybe similar the round ones found in Bentleys. I've been thinking about the use of a lot of oval and diamond forms. Ah well, I've just been busy tossing up ideas.
I must admit that my seat drawings are highly inspired by existing drawings of concept cars, they're more of an exercise at this point. Drawings seats is a bitch.
The big pic is the top down view of the interior of a 4 seater concept, but it could easily be adapted to 2 seats, just chop of 2 seats :D or 2+2 by reducing the space between front and back.
Proportions are probably off but, hey I'm only learning.
Once I get my skills improved I'll start using colour, it's a bit hard to interpret the image in black and white.
-
I've done a 2d scetch of dashboard too, but I won't have access to a scanner until friday, maybe not even then. There's no diamonds or ovals in my drawing though, mainly long curved lines. I'll try to draw more pictures from different angles before the weekend.
I thought of a C4-like non-turning steering wheel centre, and maybe putting a digital tachometer in it to add some racing image. I agree with the round vents, they look good in almost anything.
Then again a lot depends on what the body will look like.
-
I don't think the MR setup will work with the 4 seat setup.
-

Absolutely.
-
I'm making a 3d rendering of the engine right now, should be done soon.
You try too hard.
I'm bored. I have nothing productive to do until Thursday afternoon. It's Tuesday morning. That's like 48 hours of nothing.

heh. That hampster must be on steroids. for those of you who dont know what Auto-Cad is. I did a quick sampling for you. This will give us fully 3D control over the car and such. This took me around 10 minutes to do a quick two tires and some elementary shocks. My forte is the suspension.
I don't think the MR setup will work with the 4 seat setup.
Well it's doable, and I think that would be a good selling point, which is why most likely I will be for it.

Heh, I just made up another dashboard. I think I'm starting to get how to draw this stuff. Every time I try it improves.
I've attached my latest design. Drawing is fun ! :D
-
Wow Rock, you really do care about the environment!
EDIT - And Thank God UCP is getting Lagonda off the streets... Once again shows how important this site is in the modern society!
-
Yeh, a 4-door would be great i reckon...more of a challenge with refinement, driveability, and weight reduction/distribution.
-
i made a start on the body design but i think it looks a little too much like a ferrari sooo, i was thinking, if you guys had some interesting ideas you could edit the drawing and show me whatever you dont like about it. im gonna attach it on another post
-

That sums up my thoughts and vote.

ok, what i think might be wrong, is the back, i think it might be too high, and overall looks like a ferrari, but this is just a simple design, and one of the 6 or 7 i have in mind, so dont think this is final, or nessecarilly what it will look like
-
I'm liking the front, a bit Aston Martinish. The back is certainly way too high and short. The rear window should follow a less steep and long line. The wheel arches are also a bit square.
I'm having quite a bit of problems with proportions and ovals myself (the steering wheel) in the interior design. Drawing an oval in perspective ain't easy.

Thank you thank you, and everybody else feel free to out your thought on here, i will try to finish the next design soon
-
I think it would be better to define what kind of car we are making before starting on the exterior design. A front engined four seater coupe will look nothing like a mid engined two seater sportscar.
-
good point, well like i said, im making more designs so im just looking at options, but yeah i see what your saying
-
Hmm... we might need to go with a 1+3 style similar to the McLaren F1.
-
Hmm... we might need to go with a 1+3 style similar to the McLaren F1.
The McLaren F1 was a three seater with the driver sitting in the middle. Alternatively there's the Matra Bagheera layout with three seats too, but the driver on the (left for LHD cars) side.
-
Yeah, but it's a bit impossible to have a GT w/ 4 seats and a MR layout, so the (modified) McLaren layout will work
-

It is possible (think Lamborghini Urraco or Ferrari Mondial). The engine could be mounted transversally and be made as compact as possible. Furthermore this shouldn't have the space of an MPV, a pair of tiny seats in the back would do.
