Twenty years ago in 1993, Stéphane Ratel and Patrick Peter put on a GT race based on the Venturi Trophy. They then created a series in March 1994 with the help of former Porsche driver, Jürgen Barth, winner of the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours. Thus was born the BPR so-called because its name used the initials of its three founders.

The BPR was originally created to enable gentlemen drivers to go racing. However, it soon became the victim of its success as it quickly attracted major manufacturers and professional drivers. Thus, the series took on a new dimension and relaunched endurance racing on the international scene. Paul Ricard, Monza, Jarama, Jerez, Montlhéry, Silverstone, the Nürburgring, Anderstorp, Suzuka, Brands Hatch, Spa, Nogaro and Zhuhai were all the theatre of ding-dong battles between the different teams.
