Lower it.
what is that red handle thingy in the right hand side of the dash by the steering wheel in the picture?
great car, run it till it dies. I love how MB kept their gauges the same for soo long
In the steering wheel picture???? The light controls are just to the right of the wheel, and it has a little light on it to indicate whether the fog lamps are on or not. Is that what you mean????
I really like. I wish I would find my next car that way, just randomly in some barn. A "free" (Registration and maintenance costs not withstanding) car. Especially an old Benz or Bimmer.
When I was a kid, like real little (6-8 yrs old) I used to have this daydream/fantasy that I would go to the beach with a metal detector and find a car buried in the sand and it would become mine. I realize that's real stupid but what do you want I was just a kid.
LOL! This is the second one I have come across that has been just left, I did give the "owners" of this some money for it just because it was in great condition (and because I am dating their daughter :) ) but still a great find I do believe
Looks like a nice find & welcome to the Benz bretheren :)
With that low mileage, and if well maintained and cared for (and if you can handle the rather stately diesel performance) then your 300D should prove a faithful servant to you for years & years to come.
As others will no doubt tell you, these things are a prime candidate for converting to run on WVO (waste vegetable oil) a fuel which is commonly just given away, enabling you to run your 300D ... at no fuel cost at all!
If you're not aware of this independant M-B specialist, I recommend you try them first for inexpensive factory-genuine parts.
They also sell used bits and sponsor a classic-era M-B forum offering handy tips and advice to Benz enthusiasts.

For trivia, emphasising the popularity of the W123 model-series was this tidbit from only a few years ago:
That the W123 comprised over 17% of all Mercedes-Benz cars ever produced, since M-B first began making vehicles in the late 1800s!
Thanks... I didn't know that it could run "bio fuel" will have to try and track some of that down. even in really cold whether does that work? I was under the impression that it would wax up super quickly especially in one of our typical frosted mornings even though he lives in a shed
Thanks for the link also, Here in Wagga there is a merc specialist who he and his father have only ever worked on mercs and the young fella (I use that term loosely) did his apprenticeship on the 300D's so they have given some good advice and have told me to look into setting the Tap-its in it... however your site wont be forgotten
that is bizzar that bit of trivia by the way

It helps if you know the people... I didnt just walk in and steal it :p

LOL... NO! :D
Welcome to the Benz club!
However, I'll be leaving the club soon for a different kind of oil burner... :D
You know there is a Mercedes club for those who have done a million kilometres in the same car? Got a lot of members too. I've had two Merc oil burners in 15 years, sold the last one to a friend at 500,000 kms and this springer I'm running now has only 200,000 but recently has loosened up and fuel consumption has improved to 36mpg. Itr's only a 2000 220CDi auto break though, nothing like your solidly built car. Both cars have hardly cost a penny except routine maintenance but I do advise a 6000 mile (10,000 kms) oil change though for longevity's sake. That car will see you through 20 years if you look after it!

yeah i have heard of this club, it seems very possible to get these engines to last that long, whether this one does because it was left for so long will be the issue... but it was looked after before it was left and will be very well looked after now... I was going to change the oil about every 2,000-5,000k's... thats because I am a little obsessed about this kinda stuff :o
worst part is, drove the car from where the car is kept at my parents farm (untill I finish Uni) to Wagga for a run and the car was here for 2 hours max, and I had someone try and take the badge off the front! :( was very angry

If you use synthetic motor oil you can extend the oil change intervals 1000-2000 km or so (trust me its worth it). The only bad part is you can never use the excuse "my car is falling apart" to get a newer car with diesel Mercedes cars from the 1980s (they are as close to indestructible as a car can get).

Then don't peek in my barn (or my car)

If 140k miles is quite fresh, then what would be a high mileage for this car. I guess these old mercs were built to last, unlike many of today's cars.
