It'd be interesting to see how the F1 guys do on ovals if they set up the car for it - I have a feeling that a Champ car or IRL car may have the edge however as they are more used to that kind of racing.
Remember Nigel Mansell? Straight from becoming F1 world champion he won the Indy competition the next year....

Considering quickest as fastest average speed around a track it would be:
1. IRL +220 mph (Texas superspeedway)
2. Nascar +180 mph (Fontana superspeedway)
3. F1 +160 mph (Monza)
4. Le Mans Prototipes +140 mph (Le Mans)
haven't got time for next six...

In nearly all cases I'd go with open wheels. Since IRLs weigh slightly more than F1s and have more torque I'd have to say F1 on a road course and IRL on an oval. If time were a factor I don't think anything can keep up with an LMP1 car for more than 10 hours, probably less. Don't forget to put MOTOGP somewhere in the top 10. Also, if the track were dirt the Pikes Peak unlimited class cars would be untouchable.

..... if it were a dirt oval maybe winged Outlaws.
...... and what if we were talking about a motorcross course?
we really need to know what track or at least what kind of track to answer h22a's question.

I think if Nascar removed the restrictors, we could easily see 210Mph+ at Talledega.

.. and if my uncle had t*ts, he would be my aunt! :D :D :D

Pikes Peak monsters or Group B machines if top speed isn't in the criteria.
-
200+ mph is NOTHING.

Quick question- what was the fastest Le Mans prototype race car? Could it set a lap time similar to the fastest F1 car, or could it be even faster?
-
The 917 holds the race record for speed. Would have been faster than a F1 car at the track, but on a tight, twisty track a F1 car's downforce would leave it for dead

If the race would have been dry this year, the R10 would have broken the distance record and that's with the two chicanes in the hunaudieres.
-
A Sauber C9-Mercedes reached a top speed around 400 km/h (248 mph) in 1989, but that was before the chicanes.
-
two different tracks hypotheticly...
Nurburgring and Laguna Seca with each car set up accordingly
-
If an F1 car can make it down the Corkscrew then an F1, and I suppose around Nurburg as well.
