Waugh's Wheels
Well, a fairly major shake-up in the Waugh Stables last month. The 'Little-Red-Japwagon' left the fleet (sadly), though it now only lives a few miles away, so I get to see it often, great little car, loved it to bits! We sold it for £600 at almost 54,000mi.
In its place came 2, 2 Frenchies, 2 red Frenchies, one with a big nose, the other with a big bum...
The 1st aquisition was Mum's Birthday Present, a Babylon Red 2008 Peugeot 308 SE 1.6VTi(120)
The SE comes one from the top of the 308 range and comes pretty well equiped, the coolest feature being the 'Ceilo' Panoramic Glass Roof. I think it's actually nicer to sit in the back than the front because of it.
Unfortunately I'm not insured on the car, but I got to give it a good run before we picked it up from the dealership, the 1.6VTi engine has 120bhp, a joint project with BMW and can be found under the hood of the latest MINI Coopers, the engine pulls well and cleanly, feels very refined and likes to be revved, noise-wise it's strange, where the Mazda used to growl, this makes a slightly odd raspy zing. The smooth ride and very comfortable, thicky bolstered sports seats really show up the Mazda with it's tiny, unsupportive seats and jittery, stiff suspension. The steering seems to follow the trend with most modern cars in that it lacks a little in feel and at low speeds can feel a little too heavy, once up an going however it's nicely weighted. It's quirky looks and Peugeots previously patchy reliability can put people off but we all think it looks great, fresh and interesting and after nearly 12 trouble-free years (other than paint issues) with a 205 after I was born, we thought we'd give it the benefit of the doubt. It's also a little bit more spacious than the Audi in the back! Definately alot more headroom anyway...

A week later, along came another. My Birthday present.
This time a Renault. A big-bottomed Renault. A 2003 Megane Dynamique 5dr 1.4 in Oporto Red Metallic Illusion. Basically it’s an orangey red, depends on where you look.
It’s had its moments over the last few weeks, being a Renault, the passenger window kept opening itself and refusing to close again, it was forced up and the fuse removed, next week I should have a new regulator and it’ll be fine, my front washers stopped working, turns out there was a blockage in the pump, which is now sorted, and my RenaultCard will unlock/lock the car, but the card reader won’t recognise it, so I’m using the other card which is missing a corner as one of the previous owners young’uns got hungry... Electronic Fault keeps flashing up every now and again too, but hey.
Other than that, I love it! It looks great, it’s nice to drive, a lot more confidence inspiring than the Mazda, possibly because of the wider track, fatter tyres, modern suspension and bigger wheels. The 5 speed gearbox works well in action but can be a little vague, the speed-sensitive steering is brilliant but lacks the feel of the Mazdas, that god for brakes that actually do something! First time I tried them I ended up doing an emergency stop and set the hazard lights going... Whoops. The clutch is very, very heavy in comparison to the Peugeot’s which is featherweight, as is my girlfriends VW Polo of the same vintage and Dad’s A6. It took some getting used to but it’s fine now. I just have to take it easy when I drive the other cars! Standard 4 speaker + 2 tweeter sound system is really good and I love having the steering-column mounted controls, and A/C. Sadly though, mine is without the Panoramic Glass Roof which is a shame, but I’m not too bothered.

Interesting that you've replaced a car with two very similar cars that can do about the same.
-
Have you thrashed it in a parking lot yet?

One is for me and one is for Mum, The Peugeot is huuuge inside, Nobody can sit behind me in the Megane, there's about 4inches of legroom with the seat in my driving position

Noope, don't really want to, haha, I feel alot more grown up driving this than I did the 323, scary stuff! I'll wait until I get the cambelt changed before I have some real fun with it methinks

Shame you think you've already broken the bloody Megane Waugh :p
-
Aaah, it's okay, it's just the card, it won't work in the reader, it'll lock/unlock fine, but I have to use the broken card to start the car, I think it's just a battery that's on its last legs

you have a nicer car than your mum. win :D

Red and red? How gay.

Cars are nice though. I've always preferred the Megane's styling to that of the 308.
