When they reailized they woren't going to win the Le Mans race they went into the pits and changed to a special michelin tyre to achive a speed of 405 km/h (251.1 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight so they were to be remeberd for something. Now that's racing spirit

Well they DID dominate the World Sports Car Championship in 1992 AND won that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Then in 1993 took all three positions on the Le Mans podium, with Aussie racer Geoff Brabham at the wheel of the winning car.

IMO, the 1991 version with those traddemark peugeot headlights is the better looking of the lot.
It DOES sound great. ive seen a video of this car and it is jaw droping!!!
I thought the speed credited to the car was 257 mph. anyone know for sure about that? I just did 24 hours at Le Mans, over 3 days, in my Infogrames PC game. I managed 293 laps in a Panoz, and beat the Audi R8's by 9 laps.

You are talking about a completely different car. The highest top speed ever recorded was by the Peugeot powered WM late in the 1980s. That car was designed for top speed only and was quite difficult to drive. The Peugeot 905 was a fabulously designed and highly successful racing car.

Toyota has a full factory effort at the time, they had TS010...which finished 2nd in 1992 I believe....

Yes but compared to the 80's works cars of Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz or Nissan (amongst others) in the early 90's Group C was languishing, in my opinion, especially when Peugeot started winning.

There were efforts from Lola, Jaguar, Mazda, Mercedes Benz and BRM as well.
Not all of those competed at the same level at the same time....

Well yes you're right but if you compare the 1988 Le Mans entry with the 1993 one. I'm not taking merits off the car, it might as well have won even if put against all the rivals in the 80's, but opposition was much more limited in the 90's. We could argue that Peugeot came to late to endurance car racing.
It was more of a case for that the rule was changed and it suited them more. The 3.5 liter formula allows someone who is interested in developing a F1 project to spread that development into sportscar, making it more economical....
