Advantages of sidepipes?
Just saw pictures of an Ferrari 575 GTC on Swisscarsightings and it had sidepipes on it.
What's the advantage of them? Shorter distance? Better sound?
But isn't the aerodynamic less efficient with these?
-
Advantages:
Look like a old race car
Don't have to worry about routing the pipe past rear suspension / fuel tank
Not dumping turbulent, hot air into the diffuser
Cons:
Burn pedestrians
Burn you legs getting in and out
Can mess up airflow down the sides of the car
Can put excess heat into the rear tyres

the 575 GTC there is a previous Giesse operated GT1 racing car, which can normally do with shorter exhaust, ending underneath the doors...

I'd imagine that'd be the main one. Not only is it a shorter route, but its a straighter route

Another bonus is less weight

How about they look sick when flames shoot out of them.

That isnt all side pipes though...Damn uneducated Aussies :p
-
They look awesome. That's reason enough.

Jumping on the 'they look good' bandwagon; however I'm sure there are functional benefits as well. What I really want are flame shooting side pipes on my car. That would be badass.
-
Yeah, Cyco basically went over the main plusses and minusses of the side pipes.
The Viper had huge problems with the side pipes which aren't exactly all fixed. They get extremely hot and you scorch your legs with those. I bet it's hard for girls to live with them. :p
-
I remember in one magazine (forgot if C&D or R&T), the guy made eggs on the sidepipes of the viper when they were first testing it, just to give an idea of how hot they really get. Kind of made me hungry. I wonder how the paint doesn't bubble in that kind of temperature.

imo the most crucial factor is the one with aerodynamics/diffuser - the effectiveness of it is of the greatest value and pipes could do much harm
-
Heres another vote for "because they look good".
-
Sidepipes are like V8 motors. They look cool and sound glorious.
Both are completely unnecessary and totally irristible.
A Cobra replica with a major V8 and a set of sidepipes gets everybody's attention.
