the m license plate is a temporary transportation plate...not a permanently registered tag for the car...the letters would be red in color but as you noted in a black and white photo you may not be...
it sure is easy to identify the two cars from each other when you know the small differences in equipment...also only having two to tell the difference between is more simple...
was the car silver or white...my car was always white and the number two car was always silver...also mine never had a roll bar...and had a full windshield...the number two car had a half windshield...

BMW usually puts the number six on their car at events...it is in a white square background...very similar to a picture taken in 1963 with Alex Von Falkenhausen driving.
i will be glad to post some pics of BMW's car also...then you can tell if it is the same car...would love to see the motor klassiker i won't get it for about 6 weeks if it comes at all...get you...
guess you might not know that there were decal plates in the 60's with the plaquette being applied by holes in the body. If you look closely at the picture from 1961 that car has decals. this detail...
