Closing laps of the 1983 Le Mans 24 Hours, the works 956 of Schuppan/Holbert/Haywood blows its turbo while in the lead. Ickx and Bell in the nº1 956, which had had engine trouble in the 19th hour and were 3 and a half minutes adrift in second place start charging on the leading nº3 Porsche. In the end the nº3 would agonisingly cross the line in first place, white smoke and all, 36 seconds in front of the other works Porsche.

And a bonus picture of another 956, this time the Henn's T-Bird Swap Shop's 956 in the 1984 Le Mans 24 hours, driven by Jean Rondeau and John Paul Jr.

I regret i didn't pay more attention to motorsport outside of F1 and motorcycle GP's back in those days. I missed out on such a lot of great races i'm finding out about only now.

Brings some tasty bits to Rennsport Reunion a coupla years ago, skips the driver's meeting, finally comes out of his motorhome to see how it's going before his track time, happy as hell and waving a bota: "Anybody want a little wine?"

Off topic: saw his 935 "Moby Dick" auctioned in a hotel parking lot in 1984, went for a mere $30K. He bought it back a few years later for a LOT more. Swap Shop been very good to him, the man has more money than God.

Hoot! That's an interesting angle to be pointing coming through the Corkscrew... how did he manage that? You have to be ALL messed up on entry to loop it ass-first down the hill.

You know, he's garalous enough and is a great story teller, Pieter. Someone needs to interview him at length about his motorsport escapades and write a book... that could be you!

thats actually turn 9 (my favorite corner) just following the screw, a very high speed/high G load corner, and if you have a heavy foot it is not difficult to spin. but that being said, i haven't seen anyone spin there in the few races i've seen, and spinning there was the last of my worries when i drove it.

Thanks for the correction, I realize now that's after the bridge, not before. It's possible if you gas too early on track out, but should point you the other direction (to the right side of the track) unless a 270 was achived... requiring some "skillz".
Either that or he's draggin' it back onto the track from the looks of the dirt cloud.
Notice the classy "SWAP SHOPS" graphic on his Enzo. Preston is unique.
