Max Mosley To Step Aside As FIA President

    From the Times

"There will be a unified Formula One championship next year after Max Mosley was forced into a humiliating climbdown as president of the FIA. His influence as head of motor sport's world governing body is effectively over from today.

Formula One was facing the prospect of financial disaster after rebel teams last week threatened to form a breakaway series.

It quickly became apparent that Fota, the teams' association, was just as determined to oust Mosley from his position as to resist the severe cost-cutting measures that he attempted to impose on the sport."

    FIA release statement following meeting

"In view of this new agreement and with the prospect of a stable future for Formula One, FIA President Max Mosley has confirmed his decision not to stand for re-election in October this year."

Well, it finally happened. For the better, I think. Thoughts, anyone?

Woohoo! Here's hoping that solves the problems instead of just giving us a new person to blame for the same old problems.

In the best interests of the sport I'll take one for the team and nominate myself. Anyone see Bernie making a go of it? Or is he happy where he is?

I would have much rather seen Bernie go.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

Good! Now if only Bernie would step aside. That's probably never going to happen though. This is a good step toward a unified F1 in 2010. Although the press release says he won't run in October and the article says he is done now, which is it?

im glad to see ol' Max move on, but what I'm left wondering is if those new teams that signed up will still want to continue on the full fat budget that will be required.

well not really full fat I dont think, if FOTA's original proposal are to be believed, they are still limiting themselves to 40m Euro comes 2011, and 100mil in 2010. I don't know what early 90s budget was though. To be honest if you can't raise some significant capital you really should stay out of F1..

I'm sure Bernie is seeing how quickly things can turn against him and has decided to simply keep his head down for the moment.

I'm still somewhat unsure as to the veracity of Mosley's claims of not seeking re-election etc. Are they in contract? can they be enforced? I can't see him just stepping away from the table like a wounded animal.....he'll be back.
