Although I think JV goes a bit OTT with his remarks, I do think he has a valid point about how Schumacher will be remembered. The general feeling amongst F1 competitors and the neutral fans of the sport seems to be a begrudging respect for his abilities. Nobody denies that he is a great driver, but it doesn't really give people much pleasure in having to admit it. Outside of Germany and the ranks of Tifosi there is little or no affection for Schumi, either as a driver or as a person. Whether they supported their teams that they raced for or not, nearly everyone remembers the likes of Mansell and Senna with fondness because they were great characters as well as great competitors. Whether intentional or not, they made it easy for people to let them into their hearts and treat them as their heroes. I don't think the same will ever be said about Schumacher.

Schumacher is hardly a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was never even a nominee. He may never receive an award from the UN (although he is a member of something) but thank God for that. Villeneuve coughs up some convoluted logic, basically claiming that if you cheat and either accept it and/or announce it in advance it's all ok. That if you, play tricks "with class" it simply gets wiped off the slate. Someone please explain that one to me.

Come on Jacques, one thing we can't blame Michael for is you getting your arse kicked out of F1. Wonder what Villeneuve would have thought had Senna 'announced' he was going to ram him. Bet he would have been flapping his gums.

We will never mention Schumacher and Kofi Anan in the same sentence, but we will certainly love Michael. How he will be remembered after he retires? Only time will tell. But, Jack, since you seem to have absolutely no problem digesting Villeneuve's raving, I think he's assaulting not only your intelligence but also your loyalty.

Villeneuve will always be loved.... Gilles not Jacques.

Try reading the first sentence of my response to JV's comments.

I stated from the outset that I didn't digest Villeneuve's comments with "absolutely no problem". I have no loyalty to Villeneuve nor to Schumacher, I simply expressed my opinion that JV had a point about Schumacher never being as well loved or remembered as the other greats of the sport. I would've agreed with the comment regardless of who said it.

Michael will go down in history as one of the Greats (whether he is or isn't is really a mute point). Yes, he's made mistakes, errors of judgement and possibly bent the rules to suit him.
Welcome to the world of Formula 1.

Senna fans will still 'fall on their sword' as they defend the honor of their God, yet most people know that he was an arrogant so and so who only though about himself. The whole debacle with Prost at Suzuka is a case in point, everyone forgives him for it. Same will happen with Michael.

I don't think there's something like "the best F1 driver ever, of all time, the man".

I do think there are different types of F1 drivers.

    Below, my list:

Best technically-and-tactically-minded F1 driver yet: Ayrton Senna.

Most precise driving-style F1 driver yet: "The professor" Alain Prost.

Most politically-astute F1 driver yet: Michael Schumacher.

    Bitchiest yet: Nigel Mansell.

Most capable if you listen to the paddock: Jackie Stewart.

    Most emotional: Rubens Barrichello.

    Worst temper: Ayrton Senna.

Most overrated: Montoya, Frentzen and possibly Liuzzi.

    Most underrated: Wurz, Trulli, Panis.
