With sales of the current X5 still doing phenomenally well this replacement X5 won’t be officially unveiled until late 2006. Its introduction will see the X5 move upscale in both price and stature, commanding higher prices and offering more space. It’s only then that the current X3’s pricing, with which it shares much of its underpinnings, will make more sense. Inside its cabin it’ll be similar to the current 5-Series, its greater length allowing BMW to offer X5 customers additional seating in the rear to better compete with other 7-seat rivals. The engine range will be made up of BMW’s latest 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit, the hugely successful 3.0-litre turbodiesel in single and twin turbo guises and two new V8 petrol engines of 4.2 and 4.8-litres. Underneath the disguise some of the X5’s styling can be seen, the edgier lines of the latest BMWs making it onto the big SUV. Both air and steel-sprung suspension systems are likely to be offered, with either the X5 certain to retain its position as the driver’s choice among large 4x4s.
