Yeah, I know. Both were old and beat to shit. The 4Runner was my boss' car that I drove for 7 years on and off at my part time job as a courier. It was wheezy, and now has 400k+ kms. A 1998 or 1999 I think it was.

Also, Merc's... any and all Merc's made in the last 15 years. Horrible cars. That SL63 is a terrible car by all stretches of the imagination. Weighs a ton too.

Our '79 300SD was a beast. I kind of miss that car.
Incidentally, my Ma worked for MB in the early 70s. Still has a really nice letter opener embossed with the Mercedes star.

I have driven 4 modern Mercs.
Current A-Class, B-Class and C-Class. Previous generation SLK-Class.
- A-Class: Shit car for snobs who think proper Mercedes-Benzes are too big or too expensive. Avoid
- B-Class: Well at least it is comfortable and spacious. Driving position is odd
- SLK-Class: a boulevardier two seater for plastic wives (at least the non-AMG). Not offensive but it's not a sportscar
- C-Class: Great chasis. Comfortable, poised and even moderately fun. Automatic gearbox sucks off all the power from four cylinder engines. So choose manual or six cylinder

I haven't driven an E, but the C struck a good compromise between comfort and handling.
After the massive disappointment of the new 1er, the current (quite long in the tooth, actually) C-Class reminds a bit of the old 1er, only geared a little bit more towards the ride comfort and far easier at the limit. A very recomendable car, in my opinion.
I expect to try out soon the new CLA, which is about the same size and price as the current C, to see what's what.
