Civics are a no no unless you want to get the saloon, cos insurance will be monumental on a hatchback at your age, believe me when I say I've tried. It depends on what you're after. If it is a little gocart/shopping trolley then your options are reasonably limited, you just have to decide which one you want.
I personally set about choosing my first car with a totally different angle. I wasn't interested in racing, impressive styling or gocart handling, I just needed something for the job. Which in my case was blasting up and down the motorway collecting motorway miles (about 20,000 a year) and getting me to work, with the option of being able to carry stuff whenever required.
So I ended up with a Rover 400. You'll probably baulk at the thought of a crusty old man's car, but it's not a bad car. You'd probably be suprised to know that it's pretty much a Civic in disguise anyway. It's got Civic underpinnings and the engine is a Honda unit. It does 0-60 in around ten seconds and regularly returns around 40mpg. It's never failed to start on the first turn of the key and never complains about my rapidly deteriorating sales rep-esque driving style. It cost me a little over a grand and a little less than that for a years insurance. In short it's done everything I could ask of it and more.
So basically it's worth considering all the alternative. I spent ages on autotrader just trying various different searches to see what I could afford and was regularly surprised.

I'm currently saving up for this kit. Or not.

does anyone else understand what he just said? i can only read 3 missed words in a row before i give up.

rover 400 kit... thats urhm fairly ugly, i recomend getting some nice looking wheels first. brakes and exhaust system (for the power not the sound) simple and relatively cheap, and you wont look like a chav

Yeah i dont want a rover damn isnt there any good starting cars, i dont mean your Rover 400 isnt good, i mean i dont like 4 doors and i dont really like rovers, so maybe a Honda CITY not civic, Honda City CZ-i, that is the car i want to start with :P sooo you are also saying about Toyota Yaris, no, that isnt goin to happen, bit to much of a girls car, so i guess i am gonna have the Honda City CZ-i, but please carry on saying starting cars, and what litres car you get this car in :

Hyundai Coupe, it is an old one not the new one, it looks nice and maybe if it has a small enough litre engine then i can start with that, because the Honda City CZ-i is a import and the only one in England, because it was the only one ever imported

GAH! I wasn't suggesting you buy a Rover... I was explaining how well that particular car fitted my needs perfectly. The point being made was that when I first started looking at cars, I wouldn't have looked twice at one, but having done some research and gone for a test drive, I figured it was just what I was looking for. Consider all the alternatives before you plump for a generic option that everyone else goes for...

I reckon Hyundai Coupes are pretty ace. Not bad looking and cheap as chips. But there is one serious thing you're not taking into account. Insurance. You will almost certainly not get insurance on any sports coupe shaped cars unless you go to some specialist insurer who will sting your for several thousand pounds a year just for third party insurance.

Check out www.norwich-union.com. Go to their quote function, put your year of birth in as two years earlier than it actually is, then just make up anything that doesn't fit. Also check out www.autotrader.co.uk for examples of cars that you can try and get insured on.

I can't think why no one has said 12A or 13B yet............

A loop hole in that rule is that you are able to get a 13B Twinturbo FD RX7 pushing over 200KW. I'm not saying that you have that kind of money, but its a loop hole none-the-less.

But have you concidered on older RX? Like a SA or on FC RX7? Those or a fair deal cheaper, but probably still out of your ball park, i know thay are out of mine.
