Does anyone know the engineering rationale behind the shape of the air intakes on the F40's body? I have seen this same shape on several (mainly 80s) cars both road and race, so I assume there is some good reason. Thanks.

naca has determined that that is the most effective way of gathering air into a confined space

Its a NACA duct
Thanks for all the fish
Does anyone know what is unique about the popup lights?

Thanks for the info. Why aren't they used anymore? aesthetics mostly? Too costly to develop for specific applications?
I would guess asthetics. The last time I can remember seeing one on a production car was on the hood of the original-series Viper. I'm not sure if it was actually functional or not.Originally Posted by gregvl52

Naca ducts were often added later and adjuste in size to match the flow measured.
Nowadays a designer can sit down with their CFD package and pretty much control the air flow more subtly and produce the necessary cooling, intake air flow integrated into the body design.

What I've always wanted to know is what does NACA mean?

that scoop is mostly just to pass cold air over the engine, then create downforce on the way out. it doesnt really have any other function......stockOriginally Posted by Egg Nog
upgraded, that scoop becomes where the cold air induction systems get their air, and the super/turbochargers get their air.

This has NACAs...
Thanks for all the fish
