Ford Tempo vs. North American Ford Escort

    Ford Tempo
    (1984-1994)
    comparo only covering 1988-1994 models

The ford Tempo was Ford again trying to create a popuylar car, and it worked. It was based on a stretched Escort Platform. Even though sales started out slow, but in 1986 it was redesigned, a design that would lead to the revolutionary 1986 Ford Taurus. Slaes really picked up after the redesign and the car sold well until it was replaced by the Ford Contour, which was Ford's next attempt at a world car. The Countour was a slightly modified version of the European Ford Mondeo. There was a constant stalling problem on early model Tempos but late model Tempos have a record for reliability.

    EPA Fuel Economy:
    City: 20 – 21 Highway: 23 – 28

    96-hp, 2.3-liter I-4

    Available Transmissions: 3-speed automatic
    5-speed manual w/OD

    Ford Escort
    (1982-2003)
    comparo only covering 1991-1996 models

The Ford Escort was Ford's World Car. It was redesigned in 1991 on a new Mazda Chassis and it was then well known for it's swift handling and record for reliability. the new Escort got a new design simular to that of the Ford Taurus. It came in many body styles including hatchback, 4 door hatchback, Wagon, and Sedan. This model sold well even though the older models sold better, and the Escort was discontinued in 2003 when it was replaced by the Ford Focus.

    EPA Fuel Economy:
    City: 26 – 30 Highway: 31 – 37
    Available Engines:
    127-hp, 1.8-liter I-4
    88-hp, 1.9-liter I-4

    Available Transmissions: 4-speed automatic w/OD
    5-speed manual w/OD

    Prius says:
my dad has one and I know form expirance that it is cheap to run, is fun to drive and is reliable as the sunrise. The car is the ideal for the first time driver or somebody looking for fun cheap to run transpertation, from all the other economy cars, this one really stands out.

Prius, where do you get your info from ?

The 1980s designed Ford Escort was the "world car" but compromised because the US derivative drove the cost down, the handling was atrocious and the knock-need odd camber to make it "comfortable" meant the handling was lambasted in Europe. So Eureop redesigned it and few parts were shared.

The Mazda-platform was ONLY North America - again trying to make cheap, cheap cars - they didnt' adotp the Eureopan designed (and successful) platform. So this was NEVER a "world car". Your comments confuse the dates and the "world car" tag

I know that , that's why i labeled it as the north american ersion. There is a difference, but the second gen handline on the Mazda platform is better handling.

I think you missed the point I was making.

the way you wrote the line

"The Ford Escort was Ford's World Car. It was redesigned in 1991 on a new Mazda Chassis "

makes it sound as if the Mazda chassis was "world car" as I pointed out in the first comment. Hence why I asked where you got the info from ??

The American Escort looks suspiciously like the 1991-1994 Australian Ford Laser.

    Only We had a Hatchback.

Still, it's like choosing between a Heifer or a Fresian, No big differance.

IB4R's hit on somthing here. Since the late 70's/early 80's, the Ford Laser has existed on the same chassis as the Mazda 323, and in Australia at least was originally intended to replace the RWD Mk2 Escort.

Funnily enough, when Ford dropped the Laser around 2002 for the Focus, the 323 replacement jumped on the next Focus's platform.

That we did, although our sedans didnt seem to have such a huge arse...
