Mechanical Engineering/ Automotive Schools

I am starting to look for colleges to go to since I'm entering my senior year in a few weeks. Does anyone know of any good mechanical engineering school? I would like to go to one that builds the cars for the class. Also if anyone knows about any automotive schools, please post it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking of either working at a car dealership as a mechanic, teaching auto shop, or becoming a engineer of some kind.

Are there any good industrial design/architectural schools in NYC?

I'm a grad student at the Universuty of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and did my undergrad here also. The U of I is ranked in the top 5 for both grad and undergrad, but mainly because it's a good research school, meaning the undergrad actually isn't that great as far as getting hands-on experience. However, for the past 3 years, starting my senior year, I've been part of Formula SAE. If you haven't heard of this, it's a student design comp in which schools from around the world design and build a scaled down formula race car and compete in various static and dynamic events. It's the single most valuable experience I've had in college. In my opinion, you really need to do this if you want to go into the automotive industry.

As a quick reference, schools that do well in FSAE, I would say are generally good automotive schools. The industry looks very highly of individuals who were a part of this, especially from schools who do well. Many automotive companies and suppliers sponsor these events and being apart of FSAE can also lead to a career through these contacts. Off the top of my head, some good schools are Cornell (expensive but first place almost every year), Texas A&M (highly competitive in SCCA as well), and Wisconsin-Madison. You can also try and find out what research is being done at a specific university and see what interests you. Most likely, universities with a lot of automotive related research will have many automotive related classes with Professors who know what they are talking about.

columbia university has a graduate pragram in architecture, but why NYC? my cousin just graduated from an architectural school in philly, and already has a job for a contractor just north of Miami.

texas a&m if you do well you can get a great job, my dad graduated from the enineering 4 year program in 3 years and had the highest paid job in his class, so basically go to A&M, study hard, and you can get a GREAT job

soon after he graduated he got to help design the missle flip downy things on a either cobra or some other military helicopter

I've always loved New York. If I can find a place to go to school there, it's my priority.

well, my alma mater Tulane has an awesome architecture school, and their MechE program is rather good as well... for car specific things, Wyo Tech is one of the best in the country for that. i know U of I is too. But I will always push for people to go to Tulane. Go Green Wave!!!

Plus another benefit is that it is in New Orleans. and thats not bad

it is possible in a few ways to study something automotive in the Netherlands.(i am going to do that too ).here are your options:

TU Delft, follow the Mechanical engineering curse, then in you last two years, specialise in vehicle engineering.Formula SAE participator.
HTS Arnhem,a school wth a highly specialised and world renowned automotive engineering course (4 years).i will go there probably.
Hogeschool Rotterdam, same as Arnhem, but only 3 years old,instead of 50. as told, this is a bit less technical/hard as in arnhem
Privatschool in Drenthe, there is a privateschool in the north of the country,that offers the same education.

You dont feel like popping down under?

Im set to do this course after Yr12 at Wodonga Tafe (along the Victoria/NSW border) thats the only recognised motorsports training course in the country supported by the government. Its 2 courses, each one year that after both of them make you eligible for the Advanced Diploma of Engineering technology that can be studied up to a Degree level. All work experience is run by the local V8 Supercar team, Brad Jones Racing, who are just down the road in Albury.

Best of all, eligibility requirements are just completion of Yr12 with passes in Maths and English, with preference given to students with engineering and mechanical subjects. I reckon considering i do Advanced English, 3 unit Maths, Design and Technology and Physics, i should be set!
