The Lada Niva is now called VAZ 214, at least in Spain.

A dear child has many names... Like the car says on the back it's a Lada Niva 4x4, but in true Sovjet tradition the cars were also given a specific name where the factory and model was specified: VAZ 214. It depends on the country with which name it was marketed. Interestingly when i googled VAZ 214 the first sites that popped up were in Spanish.

What I would like to know is why it was given the name Niva (in addition/to replace its model name), as a non-numeric model name for these cars is quite rare, and if Niva means something neat in Russian?

Moskvich 412. It's the first serie (in an unitized body of 408 model but with 412 engine, transmission etc.) This photo was shooted in 1968 in Sydney before the finish of London-Sydney rally-marathon.

    Info from http://marathon68.homestead.com/moskvich.html
(It is a mistake on the site, there are not 408 but 412 model)

    Car 7 Avtoexport Moskvich 408 A. Ipatenko, A. Teherin and E. Bazhenov. Finished 33rd
    Car 19 Avtoexport Moskvich 408 S. Tenishev and V. Kislyh. Finished 20th
    Car 20 Avtoexport Moskvich 408 V. Schavelev, E. Lifshits and V Shirotchenkiv. Finished 38th
    Car 98 Avtoexport Moskvich 408 U. Aava and J. Lesovski. Finished 22nd

    There are all very simply.
This car has a tires with ultralow pressure. The wheels are driven with help of the friction-gear from the little wheel which are placed between two big wheels. Of course, there are all wheel drive. Turning right or left doing with help of the hinged chassis.

    Sorry for my english

I always sort of liked Volgas, myself. Good looking little cars.
