Newbie here, Please don't shoot me....Ford Probe

    Hi all

This seems like a very interesting site.

I came accross it, when i was doing a search on the Ford Probe.

I notice that there are mostly(if not all) negative views on this car. I was wondering why?

They seem like a fantastic car, ticks all my boxes for something, affordable, on my wishlist.
Sporty shape, Full leather interior, comfy sports-seats, coupe, frameless door windows, cruisecontrol, v6, stunning engine sound, huge sunroof, fits 4ppl, huge bootspace, looks sexy, sounds sexy, airconditioning, central locking, alloys, pop-up lights, plus others, all as standard. I feel this car was possibly ahead of it's time...? I don't think the shape is dated nowadays either.

Rust doesn't seem to be a problem. It seems a bonus that it shares some innards with the mazda, thus more availability. And they're a real headturner.

I must say, a REAL letdown, would be it's name. I mean, who calls a car a Probe?!

    Cheers

    Welcome to UCP.
The Ford Probe IMHO is suffering from the looks of the first version, which were really not very well balanced. Mk2 as you posted looks quite decent, but to the "fanboys" it is still a Ford

Yeh.. but if you one the car then you will be biased.. whereas on this site we all give unbiased views... and the majority think that the Probe is not that good...

The MK2s are nice looking cars. The best part about it is the V6 engine. Both the 4 and 6 cylinder engines are Mazda sourced but the V6 is of a very interesting design. The bottom-end is of a split design making bolting down the crankshaft unnecessary. The two halves of the split crankcase come together holding the crankshaft in place. Examples of this engine have gone 300+ thousand miles without a rebuild.

However, both the Probe and MX-6 suffer from marginal assembly quality and finding good used examples is rare. As these cars just don't hold up like some others in the segment. Namely, Prelude, 240SX, and Celica.

I like the looks and the performance is decent for the price, but I would have to recommend against getting this car as a daily driver. I'm sure there are examples out there that have zero problems, but the odds of you getting one of without at least something broken or on the verge of breaking is extremely low. A couple of my friends have had probes in the past, and every single one of them had at least something wrong with their car at one point. I agree with PerfAdv. Go with something else thats not going to be such a headache.

Hi there, welcome to UCP. Let's hope you stick around!!

But about the car now. A guy near me has one imported to the Netherlands. It has this huge wing on it. I think it's almost as big as a hockey goal man... It's really non-matching. However, it does have an after-market exhaust on it making this brutal sound.

    Because it isn't that great.

What you are getting is basically a 4-door saloon, but with most of the practicality removed.

It looks sporty, but it isn't. The front wheel drive chassis isn't at all that.

It also suffered an image problem (in the UK at least) and, being a Ford, didn't hold its value very well.

No. It doesn't. Unless the two in the back are masochists.

I'd say it's fine for general pottering about as an alternative to something like a Mondeo, but if you are looking for a genuinely sporty coupe, look elsewhere.
    Thanks for all the fish

i had an '89 GL 5spd and it went on and on and on. i sold it after racking 300,000km myself, and then i know my brother-in-law put another 150,000 on it after. my buddy also had an '89 GL auto and put on some major mileage too. i'm not much of a domestic fan (N.A.) so the only reason i appreciated the probe was that it had a Mazda engine, not Ford.

my buddy sold his as well and bought a '95 GT, and had nothing but problems. the '89 model definitely seemed superior to the newer models, in mechanical respects anyways. i never thought they were completely ugly, but still in the bottom 1/3 of the global styles available in their respective years.

    thanks for your comments

My daily driver is a 1.4 Escort. Extremely reliable, it just never dies! But c'm on, understandably, from time to time, one would to drive something a little more...wow .

I tried to upgrade to an E36 bmw as a daily driver. I loved it, was in love, and the escort was up for sale. But then one morning on the way to work, i lost control of the beemer on a notorious slippery bend, and she was beyond economical repair. Escort no longer for sale.

Heartbroken(i know, lame )I thought i should stay away from beemers, and rearwheel drives probably. But i couldn't help my wondering eye. With my now extremely limited budget, i was restricted to exploring the likes of RS1600i, Capri's, MG's, etc, which, with regards to interoir, and styling seemed tinny, old and hollow.

Where as the Probe, which for some reason is really inexpensive at the moment, felt wonderfully sexy, luxurious, comfortable etc etc. That sold me. I am exploring tax, insurance, petrol costs etc. and more than likely my trusty escort will still be my daily runner, with the Probe making its appearance on happy days and hey-days

The only car that seems to make my heart truely go pitter-patter tho, besides my E36 and bmw in gen), Is the beautiful BMW850, MyGoodnessMe, my boyfriend literally had to guide me away from one as we were walking by it, going for a walk. I was rendered literally incapable of thought or action when i saw it, lol!
