Why do we cant give "con" for a folder/file name?

it's on winXP. is it just me, or it is windows' bug? i've tried on win98, and it says "cannot create or replace file: the filename you specified is invalid or too long. specify a different filename". does anybody know why?

    DOnt' panic guys
It IS and has always been documented in Windows .....

Several special file names are reserved by the system and cannot be used for files or folders: CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN, NUL

    from microsoft.com .. if you'll search ..

    Do not use the following reserved device names for the name of a file: CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9. Also avoid these names followed by an extension, for example, NUL.tx7.
Windows NT: CLOCK$ is also a reserved device name.

Newbies and neo-cons. Come to think of it giving the "arguments" I've seen neo-cons shouldn't argue at all.
