Get one person to do one car to the specifications for the car model in the game - relatively easy.
Then it's only as long as it takes to do one, just 500 people doing it.
Go look at all the add-ons that have been done for games like GPL
If it was all the current (2005) production cars from all the mainstream manufacturers it'd be a LOT more than 500 cars...but does anybody honestly think there will be that many in one game? Either way, once you've got the physics, damage model and everything else sorted, you just have to add the numbers for each car, not really taking that much space when compared with...

...tracks, now that's different...as Matra's shown it'd sure take up one hell of a lot of space, and as he's also shown it's not the possibility of it being done that's in question; it's whether there's a market and THAT determines what we'll be seeing from the PS3.

Personally I don't think they'll go to those lengths for one game to appeal to a select few. Therefore I don't think we'll be seeing 50GB+ games in the near future.

I'd LOVE to be proven wrong by games manufacturers, I really would.

Exactly, it's not the console spec that matters when the games we're gonna see are made, it's all about the marketing.

erm, no, you would have a lot of data per car, but it could all be fairly mechanically produced based on manufacturers figures. A decent model of a car surface alone would include LOTS of surface and vertices. Never mind the data points for engine components, suspension components and body. Richard Burns rally engine even models the individual engine components
Like all things you can be sure that the usage woudl increase to fill the space availalble, jstu as has happened to EVERY format ever devised

Hopefully NOT as then even Blu-Ray won't make it

GPL plus add-ons already exceeds single DVDs

As I said, I'd LIKE to be proven wrong but I'm doubtful as to whether it's be profitable and therefore whether we'll see this size of game in the next two years (the time it took M$ to replace the Xbox [launched in the UK in '03, now being replaced in '05]).

well the original XBox lasted 4 years, so in 2 it may not fill it .... but what about 4 ??????

( You have to use an original launch date (2001), not a UK-only one )

But that would suggest that the console's life is longer overseas than in the UK (if the Xbox lasted from 2001 until now overseas and only from 2003 until now here)...if it only lasted two years here there'd be something else to replace it and the whole PC argument (not latest tech) would be a load of BS.(seeing as most people don't even replace their computer every 2 years)

The other thing is, what's to stop another new technology being developed for another console in another 2 years time...this time for a 200GB disk - are we going to expect a 200GB game, one twice the size of my brand new laptop's HDD?

Yeah, stores arent even guaranteeing that pre-ordering will get you an Xbox 360 in the UK...we've not had very many shipped here as usual.

    Your logic is SCREWED.
You can't un-invent two years in a design/production cyucle jsut because it didnt' launch in the UK till later.

Because HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are state-of-the art and are joint developments by the best around.
THAT gives it value in the market and international standardisation.
Just as 5 years ago the DVD format was mapped out - which included ways to go out to 30Gb, then the current investigations will bring products to market in liekly similar time frames. Personally I would like to see the productisation of crystal storage and remove all the movign parts
Fantasisiing about what might and might not without looking at what is under investigation is the realm of sci-fi writers not industry pundits
And IF a simiarly priced 200Gb DID come about then yes it would likely get developed and released. After all a prime driver for DVD and equivalents are movies (and porn - shhhh). Go next gen Hi Def and 200Gb is nothing
And as already stated once availalbe, then you will see it utilised to deliver features customer are willing to pay for.

I'm not "uninventing", it's just a fact that the product's effective 'life' in the UK was only 2 years.

And yes, we may be able to go mental with the amount of data we can fit on a disk but can we effectively use it? The whole system it was running on would have to be upgraded every 2 seconds with the rate in development we're discussing.

It would be better to do what they did with the PS1 and maximise the potential of the technology we have got instead of wasting time, money and effort by producing "new tech" which isn't really benefiting us like it should, seeing as we don't stick with it to optimize it for more than a couple of years.

So what. THAT is irrelevant. If you are comparing technologies you dont' remove years. If you did then the worlds patent system would collapse overnight. You take from time of invention and production !! Aftera ll, you coudl have imported a US version and chose not to

Already given you DATA on how it can be filled with usable data and why on earth do you think there is an update every 2 seconds. You are now just making "facts" up. New technologies dont' come out every time a smart enginerr comes up with it. They need standardised, agreed and publicised. Stop making things up thinking they support your argument, they actually dminish it as it demonstrates a lack of understanding of the topic under discussion

erm ,the PS1 hit the wall on potential a LONG time ago.
New tech is benefitting everyone or have you never compared gmaes across platforms ?
ONLY the Playstation needs this "optimisation by learning" over the years. Sony developers have to get down and dirty to make the hardware work faster /harder to get results. It doesn't come easy as they have to write major parts of a game and then rewrite it for newer releases as they start to understand it. The PS3 is exhibiting the same thinking on solution. MS at least are trying to ensure everyoen works to interfaces which enable developers to conetrate on their part. Yep they won't get the last 10% out of the hardware, but on day one they WILL get 90%. The Sony debalces in teh past have been getting less than half on day one

I wonder what Nintendo has up its sleve? So far they've led people to believe their next system (Revolution) will suck. The only good thing they've confirmed was free online downloads for every nintendo game made for all past Nintendo platforms.

Wouldn't that be interesting if they came out with a system more powerful than PS3 and 360 combined........

    just a thought

Fair enough, I understand what you're saying...but are you seriously suggesting that we should upgrade the console every 2 years just to keep up? Let's say £400 (to cover all accessories inc. extra conrollers, mem.cards, cables etc for each console, if you're really into videogames you'd then want all three consoles (MS, Nintendo, Sony) and that works out at an average of £600 a year just on console hardware.

Let's not lose sight of the original subject of conversation which was that it's the games that make the machine, yes there may be a bearing on the games by the machine but the machine cannot dictate how good the games will be. For example: I'd rather play Grand Theft Auto on PS1 than "Fusion Frenzy" on Xbox. Just because it is possible to cram 'x' amount of GB on a disk doesn't mean 'x2' amount game is better than 'x1' amount game.
