    Best Engines From The Past

List your choice of the best motors and engineering from the past.

My first choice is the Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing engine, the M 198.
2,996 cc inline 6 with fuel injection.
Engine produced 215 hp at 5,800 RPM, which allowed for 150 mph max speed.

Rover V8 deserves a mention here, especially the 3.5 from the SD1.

Seeing that on Top Gear (the SD1) I didn't know what Hammond was on about it sounding awesome. It just wasn't the same as the 3.5 litre V8 in the Morgan I drove. Then I stopped an SD1 at the traffic lights, and the guy driving put his foot down and revved to the red line when moving off. Now I see what hammond was on about.

I must say I do really like the Jaguar Straight Sixes, for the torque and noise. The 3 litre I-6 engine out of the Austin Healey 3000 I drove wasn't particularly nippy, but on sound alone, it qualifies. Definately in my top ten best engine sounds.

On a Bad day, he designs a BMW.

Was driving home after a booze cruise to Belgium and a proper 4/4 was infront of us. I must admit, that engine was one of the nicest I have ever heard in a road car. Made the tedious journey home so much better

The Steam Car was very impressive. Looking at some of the stats it's surprising that there are no steam powered cars today.

    http://ghlin2.greenhills.net/~apatter/steamfaq.html

    6. Steam cars of the past outperform I.C. cars.

Yes. - The Doble cars produced between 1923 and 1930 weighing over 4000 lb. could accelerate from 0 to 75 mph in under 5 seconds. and could maintain a top speed of over 95 mph. The early Stanley’s produced so much torque that they lifted the front wheels off the ground when the throttle was opened too quickly.

    7. Steam cars are unreliable and require a lot of maintenance.

No. - A Doble E14 produced in 1923 was driven over 600,000 miles requiring only normal maintenance. The Doble cars required no more maintenance then their internal combustion counter parts. Other Doble’s are known to have traveled over 200,000 miles having only routine oil and tire changes. ~excerpt from above site
The acceleration figure seems improbable just from a traction point of view, especially with the wagon wheels used in those days.

    Duesenberg 6.9-liter straight-8 : 32 valves, DOHC, 265 HP normally aspirated, 320 HP supercharged.

And this was built in the 1930s!!! It would still be a great engine today.

Well if steam engines are allowe then tHe '71 ( that's 1771 ) Cugnot steam engine gets the vote, no ?

As well as being first it was easily able to match the size, weight and handling of the Cadillacs to follow 200 years later. Clearly a car ahead of it's time ( the engraving depicted what's possibly the first car crash )

Note it's the first example of FWD too

PS: It IS a joke guys !!!!!
