    1948 Mercedes W142 A 320 Cabriolet

A rare and beautiful left hand drive Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 Cabriolet, believed to be the only example built
Originally built around 1948 as a design study for a future luxury cabriolet model, the W142 A 320 Cabriolet employed a 58kW side-valve engine and a number of other mechanical components utilized by previous 142-inch wheelbase luxury models. However, due to the development of a single overhead camshaft and numerous other technical innovations which were implemented on the 1950 A300 saloon, the W142 cabriolet design study was soon rendered redundant, sold to a Dutch businessman and shipped to Indonesia where it remained for the next 40 years.

In the late 1980's, an Australian motoring enthusiast discovered by accident the hapless, non-running and now 'Post Office Red' Mercedes cabriolet and shipped it back to Melbourne. After an investigation by Mercedes-Benz Museum head Max-Gerritt von Pein confirmed the vehicle's unique status (as well as its original colors), an intensive restoration project followed, which after completion just last year has brought the W142 as close to its original specification as possible.

Beautiful classic car. My only problem is with the color. A silver arrow themed two-tone paint job would be great.

Why do you assume the interior isn't to original specification?

Btw, regarding the 'non original' interior ..
The work to bring the cabriolet back to its factory design study originality involved a full strip-down to the bare chassis, during which clues to the car’s original two-tone blue paintwork were found under the door hinges and the vinyl trim covering the original matching two-colour leather trim was removed.

Using local Melbourne tradesmen and specialists, this rare vehicle has now been totally refurbished bodily and mechanically to as close to its original specification as possible, with the painstaking work only completed early last year.

Because of the vehicle’s imposing style and rarity, the auctioneers are expecting bids in the AUD$450,000-AUD$600,000 range at the Melbourne International Motor Show Auction, which will take place in the Concourse area of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 2.30pm on Monday, March 12.

I would not be surprised if an eventual buyer turns out to be the factory museum...

The colour scheme/combination of colours on this Mercedes is perfect. I hope henk's prediction is correct, this car should be in the factory museum.

Well the Mercedes-Benz museum is already superb (compared to what's near them). This could further enhance their collection.
